CFP: SPECIAL ISSUE ON INTERACTIVE GRAPHICAL COMMUNICATION.
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMAN-COMPUTER STUDIES (IJHCS)

                  Deadline: March 1st 2001

OUTLINE: Despite the significance of graphical interaction as a basic
mode of communication, and despite the possibilities that new
technologies offer for exploiting it, little research has investigated
the synchronous, interactive use of graphics in communication. Although
cognitive and computational approaches to graphics have received
significant attention, a number of basic questions about the use of
graphics in interaction have yet to be addressed. Issues of interest
include:

* comparative analyses of speech, graphics and gesture
* how graphical representations evolve during interaction
* the characteristics of virtual and actual graphical media,
* the role of interactive animation in communication
* the stability and spread of graphical styles and conventions,
* technologies for enhancing graphical communication,
* models of meaning in graphical communication,
* the contribution of graphics to multimodal communication,
* detailed empirical studies of graphical interaction,
* changes in iconicity and abstraction during interaction,
* the procedural organisation of graphical interaction.

We invite submissions on these and related topics to a special issue of
IJHCS on interactive graphical communication. This special issue
developed from discussions at IGC2000 (First International workshop on
Interactive Graphical Communication:
http://www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/conferences/IGC2000/index.html). Papers are
solicited on an open call basis. Authors from the original workshop are
invited to submit full papers and submissions are also encouraged from
researchers who did not contribute to the original workshop. The special
issue will aim to address all the relevant disciplinary perspectives and
contributions from any theoretical orientation or approach, are
welcomed.

PAPER SUBMISSION: Full paper submissions should be in the IJHCS format (
http://spuds.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/IJHCS/IJHCS_IA.html). All submitted papers
will be peer reviewed by three referees drawn from a panel composed of
the IGC2000 programme committee and submitting authors. Details of the
workshop programme committee and a list of contributors can be found at:
http://www.dcs.qmw.ac.uk/conferences/IGC2000/index.html. Manuscripts
should be sent to:
