Abstract

As robotic systems become more complex and move into real-world settings, it is increasingly recognised that qualitative approaches to HRI research are important for developing effective robots and understanding their real world impact. This workshop aims to bring together scholars with experience in applying qualitative methods, and those who would like to learn more about how HRI can be enriched by adopting qualitative approaches. We will ask participants to think about learning points and ‘top tips’ they can share based on their experiences, or to think about specific questions they have and problems they want help on during the course of the workshop. For all participants, the workshop offers an introduction to qualitative methods relevant to HRI, and an overview of methods currently applied by HRI scholars, including mixed-methods approaches.

The workshop will take place online, via the Zoom video conferencing platform. The workshop will include short talks from expert speakers, and "breakout sessions" to allow for discussion in smaller groups. We invite participants of all levels and backgrounds, from industry and academia. No prior knowledge or use of qualitative approaches is required.

Topics to be covered:

• Introduction to qualitative methods relevant to HRI
• Applying best practices and ensuring scientific rigour in qualitative approaches
• How to assess and recognise rigorous qualitative work
• Practical tips for conducting qualitative research
• Defending and publishing qualitative approaches and findings
• Teaching and promoting qualitative approaches
• Possible barriers to implementing qualitative approaches in HRI.

In addition to tips on how to assess and recognise rigorous qualitative research, the workshop will promote best practices and scientific rigour in qualitative research at various stages of the research process such as question conception, study design, and publication. Participants will be encouraged to think about how qualitative methods could be used to enhance their own research and/or the research of their students, and will have the opportunity to discuss potential challenges of implementing such approaches. The workshop offers a platform to connect novices and experts who are working with qualitative methods, stimulating discussion and sharing practical tips and literature resources.
