Australia, Great Britain, Norway, Madison (WI, USA), Japan, and

A sampling of things that are happening "locally" in the world of CHI
Local SIGs:

 Europe

  In April, folks in Finland and Romania announced plans to develop
  CHI local sigs in their countries.

  SIGCHI.DK will sponsor a tutorial by Karen Holtblatt on 16 May:
  "Contextual Design: From Customer Data to Implementation."

  Toulouse SIGCHI will hold 2 meetings: on may 4, Philippe Averty
  "L'Indice de Sollicitation : une approche de la charge de travail du
  contrôleur, validée par la mesure de paramètres psychophysiologiques,"
  and on may 18, Elyeth Tremblay "a perception visuelle: une approche
  psychologique."

  SIGCHI Italy is cooperating in the organisation of AVI (Advanced Visual
  Interfaces) 2000.  The conference will be in Palermo during
  May 23-26.

  CHISPA became a chartered chapter on April 14.

  SwissCHI's program on 27 April provided a review of CHI 2000
  led by Markus Stolze, Daniel Felix, Michael Richter, Patrick Steiger,
  and others.


 Africa

  CHI-SA 2000, South Africa's first HCI conference, will be held
  8-10 May at the University of Pretoria Conference Centre.
  International presenters include Aaron Marcus, Ben Shneiderman,
  and Nigel Bevan.  The 15+ local speakers include Bob Day, Dave
  Lockwood, Janet Wesson, Garth Chandler, & Carey-Ann Jackson.
  Congratulations go to Jacques Hugo for putting this all together.


 Americas (outside USA)

  CapCHI's next meeting takes place on Tuesday, May 23 at Nortel
  Woodline 2, featuring Gitte Lindgaard and Richard Dillon who will
  be presenting "Meeting the Demand for HCI Professionals in Canada."

  ToRCHI is having an informal meeting on 27 May with food and
  drinks at the Bedford Academy on Prince Arthur Street.  Attendees of
  CHI2000 are given a special invitation to present/discuss/comment
  about their experiences at CHI2000 and the relevance of SIGCHI to
  ToRCHI.


Middle East

  During April, folks in Israel announced plans to develop a CHI local
  sig there.


 United States

  BayCHI is going wild in May.  Its main program May 9 features
  two presentations: "How to Tell the World It's Wrong, Politely."
  (The inside story of Jef Raskin's new book, "The Humane
  Interface" -- copies of which will be given away at the meeting),
  Jef Raskin, and "How the Internet is Changing Daily Life," Norman
  Nie, SIQSS.  BayCHI-North will meet May 16: "The Evolution of a
  Feature, Plus an Actual User Test," Ellen Brodsky, Mattel
  Interactive.  BayCHI-Kids will meet May 17: "On-Line Learning:
  Examining the Hype," Peggy Kinder of Distance Learning Resource
  Network, Lloyd Spruill from Teacher Universe, Lisa Tortorich from
  Knowvation, & Linda Ullah from the Challenge 2000 Multimedia
  Project.  BayCHI-Web will meet May 4: " A New Approach to User
  Experience Testing: Tools, Methodology and Results," Maya
  Venkatraman & Bonny Brown of Vividence.com.  The Usability
  Engineering BOF will meet May 16: "Portable Usability Labs:
  What You Should Know About Them and The Local Vendors in the Area
  that Build and Rent these Labs," Nicole Sharratt of Ariba &
  Benjamin Blinn of KLA-Tencor.  Add to this several dinners,
  a job bank, a consultants directory, a lending library, and more!

  DC_CHI will hold a design contest on May 8.  The contest will be
  similar to the interactionary event held at CHI 2000.

  CHI*Atlanta's May 4th program will be held at NetEffect
  Corporation's new NetCenter for several presentations explaining
  the implications of advancements in network technologies and their
  influence on all of us in our daily lives at home and at work.  The
  evening will include a tour of the company's labs.

  GB/SIGCHI's May 9 program: "Web Accessibility and Universal
  Design," Kathy Cahill & Jean Foster, MIT.

  LowellCHI will meet May 25.  Speaker: John LeBaron; presentation:
  "Distance Learning:  Communication Challenges in Cross-Cultural,
   International Internet Courses."

  MOCHI's May 10 meeting will feature Tom Brinck of Diamond Bullet
  Design.  Tom will speak on "Writing for the Web."

  GatewayCHI's program May 3: "Contextual Inquiry - Getting to Know
  Web Users," Jennifer Ruffino.  The program will also feature the third
  in an investigative series into Good & Bad St. Louis Designs, and
  GatewayCHI officer elections.

  At BuckCHI's May 9 program, Rob Rossi from RPA will talk about
  interactive web technologies for new commerce markets.

  PhiCHI became a chartered chapter on April 28.

  NUCHI will meet May 11 at Novell in Provo.  Bob Wilson and Jose Avila
  from Intel, Marianne Radding from Financial Fusion, & Larry Wood
  from BYU will share the insights they gained from attending CHI 2000.

  Puget Sound SIGCHI's May 17 meeting will feature speakers from the
  University of Washington's Human Interface Technology Lab who will
  address current projects.
