Call for Virtual Socials

A strong community has always been a core asset of the RecSys conference series and central to its success. RecSys 2020 will continue to support this strong community-building role. We hope to create opportunities for all participants to meet new people and to share knowledge, best-practices, opportunities, and interests. To enable this, RecSys 2020 will support several virtual socials.
Virtual socials

A virtual social is a participant-led, video-driven event centered around different themes or activities. This can be anything ranging from:
- research topics and interests (e.g., deep learning for recommendation, recommendation in specific domains, Covid-19, the social impact of recommender systems)
- skills exchange and training (e.g., giving better presentations, guidance on academic job applications)
- supporting affinity group meetings (e.g., RecSys PhD students, QueerInAI, Women in Machine Learning)
- other social and intellectual gatherings (e.g., RecSys book club; pub quizzes about RecSys, computer science or other nerdy topics; wine and cheese)

Moreover, we are open to receiving proposals concerning success stories of organizing virtual counterparts of “in-person social events”. (e.g., virtual karaoke, virtual runs, etc.). In this case, we expect a description of the proposal and some pointers to the methodology (tools, apps, platform to enable the interaction) to be implemented to run such a virtual event.

Virtual socials may be max 1 hour long and must have two leads (who will organize the session, moderate the session, and ensure respectful communication). In accordance with the conference’s time zone-agnostic model, we encourage the socials to have double sessions to be inclusive in terms of the time zones of the participants (but this is not a requirement). You may specify a maximum number of participants in your event where relevant, but virtual social events are subject to the general code of conduct of the RecSys 2020 conference.

Submission Guidelines

If you are interested in hosting a virtual social, please complete this form. Submit this form before September 7, 2020 (Anywhere on Earth). Organizers and guests should be registered participants of RecSys 2020.

We will review submissions as quickly as we can after the deadline. We may combine events, or suggest other modifications (such as suggesting alternative dates/times) in order to balance the program of activities.
