Call for Participation: 1st Workshop on Replication in Extended Reality (WoRXR)
===============================================================================

October 4th, 2021, as part of IEEE ISMAR'21
Hybrid virtual/in-person workshop, Bari, Italy
(subject to modifications, depending on pandemic)

The "replication crisis" describes widespread failures to replicate empirical
findings. In many cases, over 50% of previously reported results could not be
replicated. While originating in fields like medicine and psychology, the
replication crisis has now also reached other empirical research areas such as
computer science. These issues have shaken the foundations of these fields: Can
empirical results really be believed? How can we support the reproducibility of
increasingly complex interactive systems?

This workshop aims at bringing together researchers interested in replication of
empirical research as well as algorithmic reproducibility of computing
artefacts, inside and outside of the AR/VR/MR/XR community. Specifically, the
workshop will start with introducing important concepts and case studies and
then evolve into discussing position papers by participants.

Key topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to:

     - position papers on replication/reproduction and their relation to the XR
community.
     - papers describing (successful or attempted) replication of existing works.
     - meta-analyses on the feasibility of replication in mixed reality.
     - algorithmic reproducibility of technical systems (hardware, software,
demonstrators, ...).
     - experiences from your own laboratory's efforts to replicate existing
empirical studies or reproduce technical systems and to publish those findings.
     - proposals for improving reproducibility at ISMAR (and related venues).

Workshop Structure
------------------

The full-day workshop will be split into two main sections. Morning sessions
will provide tutorials on the issue of replication in Extended Reality,
presented by the four organizers. In the afternoon session, there will be a
semi-structured discussion centred around position papers submitted by attendees.

Submission
----------

Submission Deadline: July 31st, 2021 (AOE)
Notification: August 7th, 2021
Camera-ready: August 19th, 2021
Workshop: October 4th, 2021

Attendees who wish may contribute an abstract of up to two pages, similar in
format to a poster abstract. Longer position papers will also be considered.
These will be selected by the organizers based on fitting the topic of the
workshop. These abstracts will be published in the ISMAR Adjunct Proceedings.
However, attendees are also welcome to simply discuss their experiences with
replication issues without submitting a paper. Please submit your abstract as a
PDF in standard IEEE format via email to [log in to unmask] by July
31st, 2021 (AOE).
