Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Information Systems at the Faculty of Social Sciences, ref. 79/14

The University of Agder invites applications for a temporary full-time position for a period of two years as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Information Systems. The position is located at Campus Gimlemoen, Kristiansand, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.

The position is intended to strengthen two of the focused research areas in the Department of Information Systems: e-Government and emergency management information systems. This research is organized in two centres, Centre for eGovernment ( and Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (, and the research fellow will be affiliated with both centres.

The post-doctoral fellow will be expected to contribute to research on how ICT may facilitate collaboration and interoperation between actors involved in emergency management, across municipal, regional and national levels. The objective is to support effective information sharing between emergency management stakeholders through integration of information from available sources, contributing to enhanced resilience and situational awareness. Of particular interest is the role of emerging technologies and social media for facilitating e-Participation and citizen engagement in different phases of emergency preparedness and management. Knowledge and experience with analysis of open data is also considered relevant. The post-doctoral fellow will work with representatives from local government and from emergency management stakeholders, and is expected to contribute to developing applications for relevant project calls from national and international funding sources.

In order to qualify for the position, the applicant must hold a doctoral degree in information systems or equivalent. Applicants should document research experience in relevant areas of eGovernment and/or emergency management information systems/crisis informatics. The target candidate is a productive researcher who preferably can document a strong and promising publication record beyond the doctoral thesis. Experience with funded projects and development of grant applications is considered positive.

Applicants must submit a research proposal of maximum 6 pages. The proposal should describe the candidate’s research background and interests of relevance to the announced position, possible research problem(s) to be focused, and relevant theoretical basis and methods for empirical work.

A high level of oral and written proficiency in English is required. Fluency in a Scandinavian language is also preferred.

The post-doctoral research fellow should be able to work targeted, orderly, focused and independent. The assessment emphasizes the applicant’s' doctoral thesis, other published research work, and the project proposal. Relevant experience, personal capability and teamwork skills will also be assessed. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before appointment.

The successful applicant will have rights and obligations in accordance with the current regulations for the Civil Service. Organisational changes and changes in the duties and responsibilities of the position must be expected.
