Objectives
----------

The study of operational strategies and processes used by human beings
is the aim of Cognitive Science. More or less recently, concepts and
results arising from Cognitive Science have been applied in an
industrial
setting.

For instance, the European Communities have supported a programme called

Anthropocentric Production Systems, while in the US the notion of Human
Centered Designs and Technologies has emerged and become quite popular.
Such a movement is an important challenge for firms concerned with human

beings in a workday context because cognitive approaches, complementing
more traditional ones, provide a great number of additional dimensions
that allow design and analysis of more complete and complex systems.

The purpose of this conference is to bring together:

       1. Industrialists faced to questions related to cognition.

       2. Researchers who are expert in Cognitive Science.

       3. Operation Researchers interested in discussing human centered
approaches applied to complex industrial problems.

In view of this, the topics covered by the Conference will concern
industrially oriented themes where human centered approaches have
already shown their usefulness:

  - like planning,
  - scheduling,
  - decision making,
  - quality control,
  - project management,
  - intelligent management of multimedia documents,
  - ...

This Mini EURO conference has one of its motivations in the European
COMAPS Brite-Euram project (Cognitive Management of Anthropocentric
Production Systems, BE 96 - 3941) and will be partly sponsored by the
European Communities.

It will be located at the Quartz in the center of Brest (Breizh).

Call for papers
---------------

Three kinds of submissions can be made:

       1. Proposal for a session (of three papers) dedicated to a given
          topic.
After acceptance, the promoter will be responsible for his/her

          session and chair it.

       2. Proposal for a panel discussion on a given topic (one hour).

After acceptance, the promoter will be responsible for
organizing his/her panel discussion and chair it.

       3. Free submission of papers on the basis of a summary (one
          page).

The accepted papers will be organized into sessions devoted to

          given topics.

Two types of sessions, panel discussions or papers are solicited:

       1. those discussing cognitive theories and practices from an
          application perspective,

       2. and those presenting industrial applications.

Suitable sessions, panel discussions and papers include:

  - man-machine cooperation,
  - intelligent assistance for decision,
  - knowledge extraction,
  - representation and modelling,
  - intelligent management of multimedia documents,
  - perception,
  - recognition and interpretation.

Application reports may cover practice and integration:

  - quality control,
  - management of industrial processes,
  - scheduling and planning, industrial production,
  - supervision and control,
  - transport,
  - health care,
  - banking,
  - insurance,
  - telecommunications,
  - management of the environment,
  - new technologies for information and communication.

Publication
-----------

A selection of papers will be proposed for publication in a special
issue of the
European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR) very soon after the
Conference.
They will be refereed separately.

Important dates
---------------

Papers, proposals for sessions or panel discussions should be submitted
by the beginning of January 1999.

Authors intending to submit to EJOR must give this information when
submitting their abstract.

Notification of acceptance will be given by the end of February 1999
for sessions and panel discussions and by the end of April 1999 for free
papers.

Full version of papers submitted to EJOR must be received by the
beginning of June 1999.

Notification of rejection, acceptance or requests for revisions will be
sent
immediately after the conference and final versions of accepted papers
must
be received by October 1999.
