Drones are taking mobile computing to a new level. Over the last few years, remote controlled drones-in particular, quadcopters-have become widely available. Advances in embedded processors, sensors, actuators, and light weight batteries let us cheaply manufacture drones that are stable in flight and easy to control.

Drones are available in various sizes and carry different pay loads. Besides having these devices as toys, their intended use range from reconnaissance to law enforcement and aerial photography. Quadcopters and other drones are widely used in robotics research and they are an interesting platform for teaching students real-time and embedded systems programming.

Different solutions for autonomous flying have been explored and are investigated in the community. Using optical tracking systems allow high precision indoor flying. Based on GPS and other sensors, even simple toy drones can complete outdoor missions (such as flying to a location, taking a picture, and flying back) autonomously. There is also a growing home-brew community building and modifying quadcopters.

Pervasive computing is on one hand providing technologies-in particular, mobile communication, sensing, and processing that improve the base technologies for drones. On the other hand, drones are becoming an exciting platform for ubiquitous computing applications, where input, output, communication, and processing becomes available anywhere-even in mid-air.

For this special issue, we seek high-quality submissions that describe original and unpublished research contributions advancing the frontiers of pervasive computing where drones and quadcopters are at the center of the investigation. Relevant research topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Ad-hoc communication infrastructure and mobile networks making use of drones
* Quadcopter swarms, coordination of collaborative actions of multiple drones
* Drones as components in pervasive computing systems and applications
* Interaction with drones or intuitive interfaces for drones
* Input and output using one or more drones
* Drones as robotic companions in various usage contexts
* Drones to provide guidance and as assistive technologies
* Novel media capture concepts and systems using drones
* Mid-air visual and audio presentation concepts and applications
* Sensing applications with drones
* Drones for digital fabrication and 3D printing
* Drones in autonomous logistic applications
* Pervasive technologies to prevent drones from privacy violations
* Critical reflections on the impact of drones on society and individuals

The guest editors invite original and high-quality submissions addressing all aspects of autonomous flying devices that have a clear connection to pervasive computing. Review or summary articles-for example, critical evaluations of the state of the art, or insightful analysis of established and up-coming technologies-may be accepted if they demonstrate academic rigor and relevance.
