>>>> URBAN TYPHOON WORKSHOP <<<<
Participatory Urban Design & the Future of Alternative Communities
Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, June 26-29, 2006
http://www.urbantyphoon.com

** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION **

Shimokitazawa is one of the most interesting, young, and culturally active
areas of Tokyo, with one of the strongest artist communities in Japan.
Grassroots cultural activities have emerged in its maze-like streets,
creating a mosaic of food, fashion, and musical, and theatrical
performances. However, a massive road construction project is underway,
threatening to eliminate the area’s unique features.

Urban Typhoon is a creative, multicultural, multi-disciplinary, and
multimedia global experiment in participatory urban design to brainstorm on
the present and future of Shimokitazawa and similar alternative communities
around the world. We invite creative spirits from Japan and abroad,
including urban planners, architects, designers, artists, sociologists,
political activists, utopists, and other nomadic types to reflect on the
present and imagine the future of Shimokitazawa.

The objective is to produce alternatives to the government's road plan as
well as a multimedia testimony to the unique spirit of Shimokitazawa. The
workshop itself is a joyous and participatory takeover of the city.

The workshop consists of creative units led by cutting edge academics and
practitioners from Asia, Europe, and North and South America. Each unit
functions as a team and has its own approach and media. The fields to be
explored include architecture, urban design, politics, history, art, video,
and new media. The workshop will include a Ubiquitous Urban Design Symposium
on June 28, 2006 and the outcomes of the workshop will be presented at the
Cultural Typhoon symposium (June 29-July 2, Tokyo, Japan).

REGISTRATION: On-line by June 15, 2006. Space is limited so early
registration is strongly encouraged.

Visit the website for more information, including detailed unit descriptions.
