We are introducing a new process by which members of the CHI community can volunteer to serve as ACs (associate chairs) for CHI 2016. This new process is intended to (1) increase the diversity of the PC (program committee) and (2) spread PC workload over more of the community.

The volunteering system is open through March 20th, 2015. We will ask SCs (subcommittee chairs) not to recruit any ACs until this volunteering period is over. After that, SCs will be required to look at all the volunteers for their subcommittee, although SCs will not be under any pressure to invite those volunteers and will, as always, be free to choose from previous ACs and experienced authors. This means that the volunteering system is not a “requirement”. As has always been the case, you are free to contact the papers chairs or SCs (subcommittee chairs) to express interest in serving as an AC. The list of SCs will be available soon at chi2016.acm.org, but if you served on the PC last year and wish to return, emailing your SCs from last year is likely a good start (every committee will have at least one returning SC).

The only strict requirements for serving as an AC are (1) having published at least one paper or note at CHI (note that works in progress, posters, and workshop papers don’t fulfill this requirement), and (2) having reviewed at least one paper or note for CHI (again, you need to have reviewed for the papers and notes track specifically). These are the minimal requirements; most ACs have significantly more reviewing and authoring experience at CHI and related venues, and other factors that SCs will consider in selecting ACs are discussed below.

Logistically, volunteering will look more or less like making a submission to CHI. To volunteer, you should visit precisionconference.com/~sigchi (PCS), log in to your account (since reviewing and authoring for CHI is a requirement, you likely already have an account), click “new submissions”, and create a submission for the “CHI 2016 AC Volunteering” venue. More details will be on the submission form, but the first thing the submission form will remind you is that much of the relevant information comes from your Volunteer Profile at PCS, so you should make sure that’s up to date before submitting.

SCs will be asked to consider all of the volunteers for their subcommittees after volunteering closes on March 20th, and will reach out directly to volunteers who are selected. They will not submit reviews or accept/reject decisions through PCS. An email will go out to all volunteers on or around May 1st to indicate that SCs have contacted all volunteers who have been selected to serve on the PC.

More information on AC duties, and how SCs will select ACs can be found here: http://sigchi.tumblr.com/post/110095003445/volunteering-to-serve-on-the-chi-2016-program
