Here is a sampling of what is happening in the world of CHI Local SIGs:
Africa
CHI-SA (SIGCHI's most recently chartered chapter) has announced
that it will have its second annual conference (CHI-SA 2001) from
10 - 12 September. The Call for Participation is now on the CHI-SA
web site.
Americas (outside the U.S.)
Chartered chapters in this geography: CapCHI, ToRCHI, VanCHI, WatCHI
(student), and CHI-Mexico. Prospective chapter: Brazil CHI.
CapCHI's next meeting will feature Warren Thorngate of the CURE Lab at
Carleton University, who will present, "Buddy, can you spare the time?
How technology affects the economy of attention." Date: March 21.
ToRCHI's meeting March 20 will focus on 724 Solutions.
CHI-Mexico leads the organization of this year's CHI Development
Consortium - Anyone, anywhere in Latin America. Ten researchers
from Latin America funded by ACM SIGCHI plus a number of invitees get
together in Seattle in the context of CHI 2001 to explore collaboration
opportunities and to foster CHI R&D in the region.
Asia / Pacific
Chartered chapters in this geography: CHI South India and SIGCHI_NZ.
Prospective chapter: CHI North India.
CHI South India holds it first conference, Easy 2001, on March 23 in
Bangalore. Keynote speaker: Susan Wolfe.
Europe
Chartered chapters in this geography: SIGCHI Austria, BelCHI,
BulSIGCHI, Czech SIGCHI, Toulouse SIGCHI, SIGCHI Italy, SIGCHI.NL,
Universidade Fernando Pessoa SIGCHI (student), CHISPA, and
SwissCHI. Prospective chapters: SIGCHI.DK, SIGCHI Finland, German
SIGCHI, Poland SIGCHI, SIGCHI Romania, Russia SIGCHI, and West
Sweden CHI.
SIGCHI Austria will hold its official kickoff meeting in Vienna on
March 14.
SIGCHI.DK: March 8, William Gaver gives seminar on Cultural Probes -
Probing People for Design Inspiration; March 14, HCI and Mobile units
(SIGCHI.dk/Kids - SIGCHI.dk student chapter).
Forty-eight people attended the founding meeting of SIGCHI Finland
during February. Roope Raisamo was chosen to be the first Chair.
The ACM German Chapter and the Technical Committee Human Computer
Interaction of the German Gesellschaft fuer Informatik (GI) -- the
prospective German SIGCHI chapter has organized Mensch & Computer
2001, 5 March - 8 March 2001 in Bad Honnef (Bonn), Germany, an
Interdisciplinary conference on Human Computer Interaction
(Conference language: German - with several presentations in English,
including the invited lectures on User Interfaces for All (Constantine
Stephanidis, Greece), on Contextual Design (Karen Holtzblatt, USA).
SIGCHI Italy will have a meeting on March 23 in Torino. The meeting
will be held in conjunction with a visit to the laboratories of FIAT
Research Center. (The event is open also to non-SIGCHI members.)
SIGCHI.NL will meet in Groningen on 13 Maart. "User or Consumer?
From e-marketing buzzwords to interaction design" will feature Boyd
de Groot, Peter Eikelboom, and Forian Egger.
CHISPA has announced that it is organizing a meeting for May in
collaboration with AIPO (the first spanish association in Human-
Computer Interaction). The meeting will be held in Salamanca.
SwissCHI's next event: March 26: "Was ist ein Corporate Sound®?" by
Peter Philippe Weiss.
Middle East
IsraCHI (prospective chapter), with Israel.Internet.Com, will co-host
Ben Shniederman who will give a talk on the future of visual interfaces.
The event will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel, on March 19 between
0800-1000 accompanied by breakfast.
United States
Chartered chapters in this geography: BayCHI, LA-SIGCHI, SanD CHI,
DC-CHI, CHI-Atlanta, CHI-Squared, LowellCHI (student), GB/SIGCHI,
MOCHI, TwinCHI, KC-CHI, GatewayCHI, NYC-CHI, TriCHI, BuckCHI,
CHIFOO, PhiCHI, CHI-Austin, Lone Star CHI, NUCHI, GMU SIGCHI
(student), Puget Sound SIGCHI, and Milwau-CHI. Prospective chapters:
Rocky Mountain CHI and ConnCHI. Point of contact: KATCHI.
BayCHI's program March 13 starts with a half hour of viewing posters
about UC Berkeley student HCI projects, drinking tea/coffee, and more,
then continues with presentations by James Landay and Francis Li
("Undergraduate HCI Projects at UC Berkeley") and Nancy Frishberg,
James Gray, & Doug Rowan ("LC21: A Digital Strategy for the Library
of Congress"). BayCHI-Web will meet March 20: "Web Credibility
Research: A Method for Online Experiments and Early Study Results,"
Joshua Solomon. BayCHI-UE will also meet March 20, featuring a round-
table discussion of usability engineering issues moderated by Howard
Tamler and Mary Van Riper.
Rocky Mountain CHI will be meeting Thursday evening March 29 at
SUN. (Speaker to be announced.)
DC_CHI's March meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21. The
speaker is John White; the topic of his talk is "Machine Translation: An
Old Song with New Verses." The group dinner before the talk features
Italian fare.
CHI*Atlanta meets March 1 with a program entitled, "The Effect of Color/
Shape/Design on Human Perception." Speaker: Tim Engle.
GB/SIGCHI's next meeting will be the evening of March 13. Speaker:
Lisa Neal; topic: "Storytelling at a Distance." Free food will be provided
by Sun Microsystems.
GatewayCHI's next meeting will feature a tour of the new SIU-E HCI Lab
on March 21.
CHIFOO's next meeting: March 21. "Predictive Engineering Models of
Interface Usability: Cognitive Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction"
will be presented by Anthony Hornof.
NUCHI will meet the evening of March 15 in Salt Lake City. Larry Wood
will present, "Usability Evaluation Techniques and Issues."
Puget Sound SIGCHI's next meeting is March 21. Topic: "Speech
Recognition Software: Barriers and Solutions"; speaker: Mark Griffith.
