Defining the Agenda for the Next 10 Years
May 30-June 4, 2005
The CSCL conference has become an internationally-recognized
forum for the exchange of research findings related to
learning in the context of collaborative activity and the
exploration of how such learning might be augmented through
CSCL 2005 marks the 10 year anniversary of the first CSCL
Conference held at Indiana University in 1995. Subsequent
meetings have been held at the University of Toronto,
Stanford, University of Maastricht (Netherlands), University
of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Bergen
(Norway). CSCL 2005 will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, a
bustling international city that brings together ancient
cultural traditions with a commitment to world leadership in
This anniversary of the first conference is an excellent
opportunity to reflect both on where we have been and where
we need to go as a growing field of inquiry. Just as the
first meeting was instrumental in shaping the trajectory of
the field, the conference in Taipei will play an important
role in consolidating an increasingly international and
interdisciplinary community and defining the direction of
the field for the next 10 years.
Researchers, designers, educators, and students from all
relevant disciplines are invited to participate, including
anthropology, cognitive, social and educational psychology,
communication studies, computer science, design, didactics,
education, linguistics and semiotics, philosophy of
education, sociology, and subject matter specialties.
All paper submissions will be peer reviewed by multiple
reviewers. All accepted submissions will be published as
either full papers or short papers. Papers will be assigned
to presentation formats as described below:
Full Papers: 8-10 pages. Suitable for mature work. Papers
that address a broad audience, and in particular those
that help set the programmatic agenda of CSCL for the next
10 years, will be assigned plenary presentations. Papers
of equal quality that address a more specialized audience
will be assigned to parallel paper sessions.
Short Papers: 4-5 pages. Suitable for work that is
significant yet is either still in progress or does not
require a long format to report. Authors will give a brief
presentation, followed by the author's choice of a small
group demonstration, interactive poster, further
presentation, or any combination of the foregoing.
Additionally, Doctoral Consortium participants and
organizers of Interactive Events, Panels, Tutorials, and
Workshops will each be allocated 2-3 pages in the
Papers in all of the above categories will be published on
CD-ROM as a printable proceedings with ISBN and page
numbers. The publisher will make printed versions available
for sale to those who prefer that format.
Based on reviewer and participant recommendations, selected
full papers will be nominated to submit extended versions to
the newly established International Journal of Computer
Supported Collaborative Learning. There will also be a prize
for best student full paper.
