At CHI 98, CHI local sigs achieved the high level of CHI conference
visibility they long deserved. We hope to achieve a similar level of
visibility at CHI 99 this month.

The local sigs booth will feature the enhancements that made it a popular
stop last year. And, as last year, badge ribbons specific to each local
sig will be disseminated at the local sigs booth (courtesy of SIGCHI and
BayCHI); be sure to stop by the booth to pick up yours.

Leaders of most of the chartered and prospective Local SIGs will meet for a
full-day working meeting on Monday (as announced in last month's sampler).
And look for at least two Special Interest Group meetings during the
conference focusing on local sig activities.

Are you a local sig volunteer? Then be sure to attend the volunteers
reception Wednesday evening following the SIGCHI Business meeting for lots
of food, drink, and conversation.

Will anything be happening at the local sigs themselves in May? Yes,
indeed; here is a small sampling:

 Europe

On 25 May, SIGCHI.NL will feature: "Ergonomy on the tracks" a
presentation by Jochen Vorderegger, David de Bruijn and others, on the
role of Ergonomy in the National Railway System, including the design of
the national ticket machine, the European Train Control System, and other
  aspects of the train system.

SwissCHI's meeting on May 27th at 1830: Dr. Ulf-Dietrich Reips,
Universität Zürich: « Designeinflüsse bei WWW-Befragungen: Empirische
Ergebnisse aus dem Web-Labor für Experimentelle Psychologie» (in German).

 Americas (outside USA)

CapCHI will join the Ottawa Ergonomics Society to host "Designing for
Adaptation: Ecological Interface Design," by Kim J. Vicente on May 11.

VanCHI's program May 25: "A Taste of CHI 99." Kori Inkpen will present
an overview of the CHI 99 Local SIGs workshop and present highlights from
the conference. Yanqing Wang and Regan Mandryk will give their CHI 99
presentations: "Object Manipulation in Virtual Environments: Relative
Size Matters," and "Superimposing Display Space on Workspace in the
  Context of Endoscopic Surgery."

CHI-Mexico became a chartered CHI local sig on April 27, so May is
its first official month of being.

 United States

BayCHI's program on Tuesday May 11: "Fluid Documents: Annotation in
Context" (Bay-Wei Chang, Jock Mackinlay, & Polle Zellweger), & "The
Open Mind Initiative: An internet based distributed framework for
developing 'intelligent' systems" (David G. Stork).

ConnCHI's May 12 meeting to be held at Sonalysts in Waterford, CT: "What
do video games, the military, and Hollywood all have in common?" The
meeting will include demos of two new video games, a presentation of a
multimedia authoring project Jim McCarthy is working on with the Naval
Air Warfare Center, and a tour of the Sonalysts recording studios, film
  stages, and media center.

CHI*A is organizing a group of CHI*A members to speak to some Georgia
Tech graduate students in the HCI program in May.

GB/SIGCHI will meet May 11: "Interfaces that Recognize and Respond to
Human Expression of Emotion," Rosalind W. Picard.

MOCHI's May 12 program: "Marketing Usability," by Stephen Markel.

GatewayCHI will meet on May 5th; topic: "Web Design & E-Commerce."
