Special Issue of Virtual Reality journal: "Haptic Interfaces and
Applications"

Important Dates:

Deadline for expression of interest: May 27th 2005.

Deadline for submission of full papers: July 22nd 2005.

Devices that provide haptic feedback are increasingly being used in all
manner of applications to provide an improved dialogue between a
computer interface and a user. The use of the sense of touch allows a
new range of applications to be targeted, and for existing interactions
to take new forms. The scope of haptic applications now looks set to
grow further, with the release of significantly lower cost haptic
devices within the price range of individuals or small institutions.
There is an increased need to develop heuristics, guidelines and
standards for their use to allow a new group of developers to design
effective haptic experiences. This special issue is dedicated to
exploring the relationships between haptic interface devices, human
perception and computer applications. Topics of interest include (but
are not limited to) the following areas:

*	Task evaluation and usability issues
*	Human factors
*	Multimodal and cross-modal haptic interfaces
*	Haptics and affect
*	Supporting communication with haptics
*	Medical applications
*	Haptics for art and design
*	Applications for blind and visually impaired users
*	Haptics for gaming and entertainment
*	Haptics in immersive virtual environments
*	Haptic interface hardware for applications

The special issue will appear in the Springer journal Virtual Reality
(www.springeronline.com/journal/10055). Papers should typically be less
than 8,000 words and of standard journal content: reports of original
research, review papers, essays and discussions. Papers will be peer
reviewed. Prospective authors should indicate their intention to submit
by May 27th, including a planned title for the submission and names of
authors. Papers should be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF formats by
22nd July 2005. Please direct all submissions and correspondence to
