        Improving the Interplay between
 Usability Evaluation and User Interface Design

        One-day Workshop at NordiCHI'04

The goal of this workshop is to determine state-
of-the-art in the interplay between usability
evaluation and user interface design and to
generate ideas for new and improved relations
between these activities. The aim is to base the
determination of the current state on empirical
studies. Presentations of new ideas on how to
improve the interplay should also be based on
empirical studies. Within this focus, topics of
discussion include, but are not limited to:

  - Which products of user interface design are
    useful as the basis for usability
    evaluations?
  - How do the specific products from user
    interface design influence the techniques
    that are relevant for the usability
    evaluation?
  - In which forms are the results of usability
    evaluations supplied back into user interface
    design?
  - What are the characteristics of usability
    evaluation results that are needed in user
    interface design?
  - Do existing evaluation methods deliver the
    results that are needed in user interface
    design?
  - How can usability evaluation be integrated
    more directly in user interface design?
  - How can usability evaluation methods be
    applied in emerging techniques for user
    interface design?

IMPORTANT DATES
August 20: position papers due
August 27: notification of acceptance
October 23 or 24: workshop, final date to be
decided by the conference organizers

EXPECTED OUTCOME
The outcome of the workshop is a collection of
position papers as well as a presentation and
discussion of these position papers. We are
contacting key HCI journals about their
willingness to produce a special issue on
usability evaluation and user interface design
based on the best papers from the workshop.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED
Position papers are due August 20. Position
papers should be submitted in PDF-format to
[log in to unmask] Participants will be notified
before August 27 and subsequently the papers
will be made available to the other workshop
participants.

Tentatively, the Workshop-programme (full day) is
as follows:
  - Introduction to workshop.
  - Presentation of the participants.
  - Discussion of position papers in two to four
    thematic groups of participants.
  - Reports from the groups and plenary
    discussion of main issues.
  - Discussion of how to continue the work

PARTICIPANTS
Participants are accepted on the basis of their
submitted position papers. We aim at 15 with a
maximum of 20 participants. Note, participants

ORGANIZERS
Kasper Hornbæk, assistant professor at the
University of Copenhagen. He has a PhD in human-
computer interaction. He works with usability
evaluation, information visualization, and
computer-supported education.

Jan Stage, associate professor at Aalborg
University. He has a PhD in information systems.
He works with methods for usability evaluation,
user interface design, prototyping, and object-
oriented analysis and design.
