Third ACM International Workshop on Mobile Systems for Computational Social Science (MCSS)

                            Co-located with ACM UbiComp'14

                                           Seattle, US

                                    13 September 2014

                            http://nclab.kaist.ac.kr/MCSS2014/

*Scope of the Workshop*

Advances in mobile systems are providing unprecedented opportunities for interdisciplinary research combining social science and computing as they enable unobtrusive, large-scale, and longitudinal studies of human behaviors and social interaction. Mobile computing technologies are offering new observational study methods that can overcome the limitations of traditional ones such as interviews, surveys, and lab studies, and also allowing active experimentations that use real-time behavioral and psychological interventions. Understanding and applying social science theories as well as developing new methodologies for this emerging mobile environment will be the key to fully take advantage of such opportunities.

The ACM Workshop on “Mobile Systems for Computational Social Science” brings together researchers working at computer science and social sciences to explore and discuss recent advances, radical ideas, and hands-on experiences in designing and evaluating new types of mobile systems and advancing social science studies. This is the third edition of the workshop, continuing the success of the two previous editions which brought researchers from various areas including computer science, psychology, sociology, political science, communication (the first edition was (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/events/mcss2012/) co-located with ACM MobiSys’12 and the second (http://events.cs.bham.ac.uk/MCSS2013/) was at ACM UbiComp 2013). This year we expect great interest not only from the researchers already actively working in this area but also from practitioners in industry and the mobile and social computing communities as a whole.
MCSS 2014 expect submissions on all aspects of mobile systems for computational social science including mobile system design, system technology, application, data analysis (qualitative or qualitative) and social experiments in mobile environment, mobile crowd sourcing, etc. Submissions covering social science research in mobile computing environment are especially encouraged.

We will invite to submit papers in the following areas:

· Design, implementation and evaluation of mobile systems for computational social science

· Experiment design of social and behavioral experiments using mobile technologies

· Design and implementation of algorithms for mobile system applications

· Architectural issues, including middleware and operating systems support for social applications

· Integration of mobile technologies and cloud computing for social applications

· Energy efficiency issues in designing socially-aware mobile systems

·         Mobile social sensing systems

· Implementation of mobile technologies for psychological and health interventions

· Integration of mobile and Web technologies for behavioral intervention

· Deployment and testing of mobile systems for social analysis and applications

· Data collection, anonymization and storage of social and behavioral data collected by means of mobile systems

·         Data protection and privacy

· Inference of high-level contexts beyond location and activity (e.g., intention, preference, attention, emotion)

· Large-scale data collection and experiments with crowdsourcing

· Deep personal analytics and self-quantization for persuasive mobile applications

* Submission Format *
Paper submissions will be limited to 10 pages (ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstracts Format. Word template, LaTeX template). We indeed welcome short papers of less than 10 pages in length. You can submit your papers at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mcss2014

Extended Abstract format for social sciences papers : Considering the different format of the conferences and workshops of the social science domain, we allow social science studies to be submitted in an extended abstract format. The selections will be based on the novelty of the submission and relevance to audience interest.

* Important Dates *
Paper submission due : June 18, 2014 (5:00 pm PDT)
Notification of acceptance : June 26, 2014
Camera Ready submission : July 3, 2014
Workshop : September 13, 2014
