WORKSHOP AND TUTORIAL CHAIRS:
Barbara McManus, <[log in to unmask]>.
Dave Roberts, <[log in to unmask]>

Workshops and Tutorials for HCI2010 will be organised on a similar basis.

Workshops and Tutorials will take place on either the Monday 6th September
or the Tuesday 7th September prior to the main conference. Participants
are encouraged to attend the rest of the HCI2010 Conference, but this is
not a requirement.

Tutorials

Tutorials can provide an introduction to new research techniques for HCI
researchers; resources for educators; techniques for practitioners; or
introductions to HCI for researchers from other fields. Proposals must
describe topic and format; intended audience; background of the presenter;
and an indication of ideal audience size.
Tutorial proposals are reviewed informally against the following criteria:
1. Track record of the presenters
2. The relevance of the topic to the conference and HCI in general
3. The quality and feasibility of the workshop programme

Workshops

Workshops provide a valuable opportunity for a small group to meet and
engage in rich and interactive discussions about a topic of common
interest. Workshop proposals may address any topic of interest to the HCI
community: basic research; applied research; new methodologies; emerging
application areas; tools; models; and design innovations. We expect a
workshop topic to be sufficiently focused that, in principle, it could
serve as a step towards producing a special issue of a journal. Workshops
are expected to be able to attract between 5 and 20 participants.

We require all successful workshops to produce a poster that will be then
be displayed during the conference itself, to allow delegates to benefit
from the output of contributing workshops.

A third volume of proceedings will be produced containing the collected
position papers / slides from the workshops, submitted by the final
position paper deadline.

Workshop proposals are reviewed informally against the following criteria:
1. Track record of the presenters
2. The relevance of the topic to the conference and HCI in general
3. The quality and feasibility of the workshop programme
4. The novelty of the topic - i.e. does it take HCI forward

Where appropriate additional reviewers are consulted for submissions by
HCI 2010 committee members.

Submissions for workshops or tutorials

Submission of a proposal via the HCI 2010 website must include:
1. A covering letter giving phone, email and address of the primary
contact; a one-paragraph biographical sketch for each organiser, a 30-word
summary; an explanation of the timeliness and importance of the theme; the
way the workshop/tutorial will be run; the goals of the event, and the
likely backgrounds of the participants.
2a) A two-page description using the ACM template (link below), containing
a title, contact details for the coordinators, an abstract, a description
of the topic(s) and an account of the workshop/tutorial procedure.
2b) A programme that sets out how the event will be run; the goals of the
workshop/tutorial (including an explanation of the relevance and
timeliness of its topic), and the likely backgrounds of those who would be
sufficiently enthused in the topic that they might wish to participate.
