We warmly invite you to participate in ECSCW 2003 - the 8th European
Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Helsinki, 14. -
18. September 2003.

Conference web pages:

CSCW is a multidisciplinary area of research devoted to the use of
computers to support cooperative work. The community encompasses
interests in systems development and design, the theory and practice
of CSCW, the installation and use of CSCW systems, the application of
novel technologies, and the relation between the social and the

The ECSCW'03 conference will be the major European forum and meeting
place for researchers and practitioners in academia, industry,
consulting, or government interested in topics related to the theory,
practice, design, or support for collaborative work. The working
language of the conference will be English.

The conference will consist of pre-conference events, technical
program and social program. Before the conference proper, two days
are reserved for doctoral colloqvium and workshops -- there are 12
interesting workshops to select from (some of them are still open for
position papers).

The three-day conference program contains papers, posters, videos,
and demonstrations of original CSCW work that will be presented and
debated over the conference. The high quality of contributions
selected for the conference will ensure that it will be an important
forum for the presentation and discussion of the state of the art and
future visions for Computer Supported Cooperative Work.

The technical program will be opened by the keynote talk "Working and
Learning when the Answer is Not Known" by Gerhard Fischer (University
of Colorado, Boulder). The program committee has selected 20
excellent papers for presentation, and there will be a panel on
"Working out "Work" -- Computer-Supported Cooperative What?" to
discuss and debate what is happening in the field and where it may be
heading. Demonstrations, posters and videos will have their own time
on Wednesday afternoon, and finally on Thursday afternoon John
Thackara (Doors of Perception, Amsterdam) will deliver the closing
keynote: "Thermodynamics of cooperation".

The social program will offer amply time to meet old colleagues and
to make new friends in convivial environments. There will be a
possibility for pre-or post-conference trips to Tallinn or to St.

The conference will be held in Paasitorni conference center, a
walking distance from the center of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
The early registration is open until 20th July, so register now!
(For registration use the link from conference web pages.)

We look forward to welcoming you to Helsinki in September 2003.
