During the past few years, the reusability of educational content has been one
of the main issues in the learning objects economy. To this end, well-defined
approaches to the creation and sequencing of content-based, single learner,
learning activities were developed. However, there is little progress yet in
designing context-based learning activities involving groups of learners
interacting within a set of collaborative environments. A first step is to agree
on common ways for representing learning scenarios and describing the interactions
between participating roles (learners, tutors, etc.) and educational systems'
services. The ultimate goal is to structure learning scenarios that are separated
from the learning resources. Thus, learning resources can be reused within different
scenarios and scenarios can also be reused when populated with different resources.
The IMS Learning Design specification provides a standard notation language for the
description of learning scenarios. This specification promises the capability of
describing a wide variety of learning activities based on different pedagogies,
including group work and collaborative learning.

The session will focus on discussions on the issues of designing learning activities.
The goal of the session is twofold: to attract the interest of related research
communities to the important issue of designing learning activities, and to discuss
more deeply the use and implementations based on the IMS Learning Design specification.
These discussions should lead to a better understanding of the IMS Learning Design
specifications, its application in real life educational systems, and its capability
for describing complex pedagogical scenarios such as collaborative learning scenarios.

Suggested themes that the papers should be addressing include, but are not limited to:
. Modeling Educational Content using the IMS Learning Design
. Designing Learning Activities for Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
. Instructional Reusability with the IMS Learning Design
. Learning Design Authoring Tools
. Good practices in Learning Activities design
. Educational Systems using the IMS Learning Design

Authors must submit an electronic copy (in word or pdf) of their complete manuscript
directly to the Session Chair ([log in to unmask]) on or before October 28, 2004. Authors
will be notified about acceptance by November 12, 2004. Camera ready copy of accepted
papers will be due by December 5, 2004.

Selected papers will be invited for a Special Issue of the Advanced Technology for
Learning published by ACTA Press.
