Call for Participation in Workshop: Teaching HCI: A Living Curriculum?

We invite colleagues to a submit proposals to participate in a workshop on the HCILliving Curriculum to be held at AfriCHI.  The goals are to: 1) exchange information about HCI education practice and resources, 2) seek examples of indigenous innovation in the delivery and teaching of HCI, 3) share goals in HCI education for each particular case/scenario, 4) brainstorm and 5) share existing practice, resources and goals to outline a plan to implement a curriculum that considers findings from the study on a Living Curriculum [1, 2],
The workshop will include an explanation of the HCI Living Curriculum followed by sessions seeking to address the goals: 1) current practice and resources, 2) goals, 3) brainstorming and 4) planning, through consensus, each session will generate conclusions and work items toward the creation of a plan for implementing a viable living curriculum within each particular context.
We would like to invite participants who are passionate about HCI education, have a rich HCI education portfolio and can contribute with diversity in views about HCI education.  We are particularly interested in the HCI education practice in Africa but other qualified people are welcome to submit and attend.
Position papers should inform the reader about the proponent’s experience in HCI education and particular views on the creation of an HCI living curriculum and answer the following questions:

•       Explain your current HCI education practice, curriculum and resources.

•       What are your HCI education goals for the next five years?

•       What are your concerns about adopting an HCI living curriculum at your institution?

•       What characteristics should an HCI curriculum have?

•       What factors (in your experience) will influence the adoption of a living curriculum?  Provide an educational platform, pedagogical approach, technological, structural and cultural considerations that should be taken into account.

•       Do you have an example/s of indigenous innovation in the delivery and teaching of HCI?


In addition to educators and professionals, we encourage students to participate.  Students should submit a statement of interest describing their research and/or design projects and informing us about how their particular HCI education experience prepared them for their project(s).
At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop.  All participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.

Selection Criteria:
Proposals should demonstrate:

-       Description of practice, resources, and goals in HCI education

-       Understanding of HCI living curriculum

-       Communicates a commitment and/or vested interest in the HCI education agenda for Africa
