ABSTRACT:
Human Computer Interaction now has an established place in the curricula of
many University departments. It is a necessary component in the professional
development schemes advocated by IFIP TC13, the ACM, the British Computer
Society, the IEEE and the IEE. This workshop will provide a forum for
practitioners to discuss 'leading edge' techniques and technologies for
teaching HCI in theory and/or practice.

KEYWORDS:
Human-Computer Interaction, Education, Tele-Teaching, Tele-Education

GOALS:

Identify ways that HCI education programs can get benefit from modern
teaching techniques. Identify ways that HCI can provide benefit for
education programs. Identify ways to increase collaboration between industry
and academia.
(1) Can we use multimedia technology to implement networks of teaching
excellence?
(2) What kind of support do we need for teaching both at undergraduate and
postgraduate level?
(3) Undergraduate teaching: professional development and accreditation; the
role for HCI within both the Software Engineering, Psychology and Sociology
curricula.
(4) Postgraduate teaching: what is a PhD in HCI?, what criteria should we
impose in a multi-disciplinary subject? how can those multi-disciplinary
criteria be defended within the traditional departmental structures of most
Universities?

FORMAT:

The workshop will last one and a half days. It will include approximately 20
participants. Prior to the workshop, participants will submit a position
paper that includes: (1) a description of their current experiences in
education either academic or industry, and (2) a description of a proposed
or hypothetical teaching project in their area.

Activities at the Workshop:

The primary activities at the workshop will take place in small working
groups. The working groups will be made up of 4-5 people. During the first
working group meeting, the first two goals of the workshop will be
addressed. Each group will develop two lists. One list will share multimedia
technology to implement networks of teaching excellence, and the other will
share strategies to support teaching both at undergraduate and postgraduate
level. For each suggestion on each list, participants will identify what
techniques, technology, skills or attributes this suggestion will help
develop. To address the third goal of the workshop, working groups will
devise conditions for professional development and accreditation. To address
the fourth goal of the workshop, working groups will compile conditions for
a PhD in HCI.
As the final activity of the workshop, these results will be presented to
the whole group. Finally, we intend to develop a web site of views and
position papers about the effective teaching of HCI.

Intended Participants and Audience:

The workshop primarily aims at scientists and practitioners that apply
'leading edge' techniques and technologies to solve practical teaching
problems. To attend the workshop, one should submit a position paper, a one
page extended abstract or a statement of interest. In case of too many
submissions, the program committee selects participants on expected the
contribution to the workshop discussion. Ideally, the audience contains a
mix of university and industrial participants.

Participation:

Deadline for submitting the position paper is JULY 23, 1999.
