[NOTE TO EDITOR: I DID NOT RECEIVE A COPY OF THIS MESSAGE SENT TO
CHI-ANNOUNCEMENTS ON SEPT. 14; IF IT HAS BEEN SENT ALREADY, PLEASE CONFIRM;
IF NOT, PLEASE RE-SEND OR REPLY -- JK]
Greetings.
I am writing to you as the new editor of SIGCHI Bulletin. As many of you
know, Steven Pemberton has been "doing double-duty" as editor of both the
Bulletin and interactions. The chair of SIGCHI convinced me that taking on
this role would help serve the SIGCHI membership and the HCI community.
So, having taken on that responsibility, I'm turning to you for ideas, for
feedback, and for help.
First, let me bring you up-to-date on the status and plans for the Bulletin.
* As most of you (I hope!) are aware, Bulletin production is behind
schedule. SIGCHI has taken steps to get back on schedule quickly.
The
first three issues for 1999 are being completed now, with
camera-ready
copy soon to be sent to ACM for printing. The October issue will
come
out later this Fall, and we expect to be back on schedule for
Y2K.
* Two of my goals as editor are to increase the interactiveness of
the
Bulletin, and to increase the coverage of content of interest to
SIGCHI
members. The first step towards interactiveness will be the
introduction
of a "letters to the editor" forum starting in January 2000. The
goal of this
forum is to provide a way for SIGCHI members to discuss current
issues
and raise concerns without the overhead involved in writing a
full article. I
encourage you to send in such a letter either in reaction to
articles in
the Bulletin or to raise new issues of public policy (regional or
global),
issues relating to the HCI field in general, or other issues of
particular
interest to SIGCHI members.
I am also seeking additional contributing editors to expand
coverage of
international issues, to keep SIGCHI members informed about non-
SIGCHI conferences and events, and to expand content targeted at
SIGCHI's student members.
* Both of these goals will take place in a changing environment.
The
Bulletin is evolving as the web and searchability become
increasingly
important and as SIGCHI has successfully spawned a set of
high-quality
publications including interactions. The next year or two will
help define
the content and delivery forms through which SIGCHI Bulletin can
best
serve the SIGCHI membership.
Some of these changes are straightforward and underway. Already,
there
are small changes to the web site and submission process. Over
time, I
will gradually update submission, editorial, and production
processes in
an effort to speed up and simplify production, conserving
volunteer energy
for finding and developing content. These changes will come
slowly,
allowing people to submit articles-in-process without annoying
changes
in format or requirements.
Now, it is your turn. I want to hear from you.
I want to hear how the Bulletin meets your needs, and how it falls
short.
I want to hear what parts of the Bulletin you would change, and what
you
would keep the same.
I want to hear from all of you ... and yes, I'm ready to deal with
thousands of
comments, and will be thrilled to receive them!
And, of course, I want to hear from people who are able to volunteer
some of
their time to make the Bulletin better. Over the next few months, I
will be
looking for additional people who can:
* contribute invididual articles
* write or edit columns
* serve as contributing and associate editors
* assist in the production process
* provide technical support for the web site (script-writing,
content enhancement)
Your first opportunity is now! Articles and letters submitted by October 4
will be considered for the January Bulletin.
[This is the only message that will be sent to chi-announcements on this
