Call for chapter proposals
Proposal submission deadline: July 30, 2008:
Usability and User-Centered Design in Software Development:
Case Studies and Real Life Applications
A book edited by Tobias Uldall-Espersen, Ann Blandford, Erik Frøkjær, and
Timo Jokela

Introduction
Current research fails to address why practical usability work only has a
limited impact on real-life software development. A number of reasons for
this have been suggested, for example:
·	Most research studies focus on generating reports that list usability
problems with a certain piece of software.
·	Only very few studies of usability evaluation are conducted in real
industrial settings.
·	Research is only beginning to address how stakeholders understand and
contribute to usability work.
The aim of this book is to take real-life work of usability practitioners as
a starting point and address how they work with usability and what we can
learn from their practises in order to improve the impact of conducted
usability work.

The book succeeds an international workshop held in 2007 and additional
information can be found on
http://www.diku.dk/forskning/infosys/chiworkshop.

Objectives of the book and target audience
The overall objectives of the book are to create and present a corpus of
case studies enabling the reader to reflect and learn from the various
cases. With such a corpus of cases we aim at:
·	Providing academic researchers and students with real-life experiences of
usability work, and thus helping them building realistic understandings of
how usability work is conducted under realistic industrial settings.
·	Sharing important usability work experiences among usability practitioners
and thus helping to improve existing industrial practises and inspire new
practises.
·	Presenting realistic examples of usability work to key stakeholders in the
systems development process in order to help them gain a clearer and more
coherent view on the possibilities and risks when doing usability work.

Topics and submission details
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
·	Handling usability as a quality issue in a software development process
·	Integrating usability work in a software development process
·	Situating usability work in an organisational context
·	Planning, conducting, utilizing and evaluating usability work

Each chapter must be a case study that:
·	is based on practical experiences from a concrete software development
project,
·	contributes to a better understanding of how usability work can impact
software product design or the software development process,
·	offers plausible methods for and/or innovative approaches to improving
software product usability, and
·	provides the reader with a clear and coherent description of the usability
work process and the gained experiences, and stimulates the reader to
reflect and learn from this description.

Submission procedure
July 30, 2008: Proposal deadline
August 15, 2008: Proposal acceptance deadline
November 30, 2008: Full chapter deadline

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 30,
2008, a 2-4 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and
concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be
notified by August 15, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent
chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters should be submitted by
November 30, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a blind review
basis. The book will be published by IGI Global, www.igi-global.com.
