CFP: Human interaction with domestic robots
Special Issue of Journal of Physical Agents (JoPhA)

Guest Editors:
Shaun Lawson (University of Lincoln, UK);
Thomas Chesney (University of Nottingham, UK).

Submission deadline: 29th Feb 2008

There is a great deal of current research centred upon the creation of
artificial systems which might be considered, by humans, to be social
entities, agents or actors. In particular, the development of social
robots is a highly active field which is being driven by the widespread
belief that we will, within a matter of a few years, be expected to
engage in social interactions with embodied robotic systems in everyday

For this special edition of JoPhA we would like to
invite submissions of research papers which report work exploring themes
of interaction with domestic robots. The future purpose of domestic
robots devices could vary considerably - from entertainment-based agents
through to robotic cleaners, companions, assistants and helpers. Some of
these areas are controversial in some respects and we would particularly
welcome contributions addressing such issues head-on. The nature of the
special issue will also be inter-disciplinary and we expect to publish
contributions from a broad perspective - from analyses of the social,
ethical and cultural issues arising from the deployment of domestic
robots through to contributions assessing the control and cognition
required to build robots which can operate safely and effectively in
domestic environments populated with humans.

Suggested topics of interest include:-
   - Socio-technical evaluations of existing domestic robots such as
   - Cognitive and perceptual requirements of domestic robots
   - Interaction with domestic entertainment robots
   - Robots as household assistants or that assist ageing-in-place
   - Behavioural and morphological requirements of domestic robots
   - Robots as social companions for older people
   - Domestic security robots
   - Integration of robots with smart homes and ambient intelligent

The important dates involved are:-
   - 29th February 2008 - deadline for submission of full papers
   - 30th April 2008 - Notification of acceptance + feedback of reviews
   - 30th May 2008 - Deadline for camera ready copies.
   - late 2008 - Publication of special issue

Submission of full papers should be made via email to the guest editors
at [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] by the
initial deadline of end of Feb 2008. When preparing papers authors are
requested to consult the journal formatting and style guidelines at
