Call Description

The Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) provides a forum in which students
have a unique opportunity to meet and discuss their work with each other
and a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. The forum
provides an informal and interactive setting for acquiring feedback on
current research and creative explorations and to receive guidance on
future directions. Applications may address any of the topics, approaches,
and disciplines related to creativity and cognition. The main conference
theme this year is “transformational creativity.” Please see the main call
for papers for more information on the conference.

We welcome applications from graduate students in a research-oriented
doctoral program or other terminal degree program (e.g. MFA) in any of the
disciplines and approaches related to creativity and cognition. Applicants
should have an established direction of research relevant to the
conference. In addition, their research should be focused and advanced
enough that the student will benefit from guidance provided by peers and
senior colleagues at the Graduate Student Symposium.

The paper must be entirely authored by the student. The four-page paper
should introduce the research/design area, briefly summarize completed work
and ongoing work, and lay out a planned trajectory of research toward
thesis completion. The paper can highlight a particular aspect of the work
if specifically appropriate to the Creativity and Cognition conference and
the conference theme. The poster design should be in landscape format,
reduced to one standard letter page in size and submitted in PDF format.
Final poster sizing will be shared with successful applicants on
acceptance, and students will be expected to print and bring their own
posters. The poster will be shown during the general conference poster
session. Advisors’ or supervisors’ letters of support should indicate that
the work has reached the appropriate level of maturity for presentation in
the Creativity and Cognition GSS venue. The letter of support and
biographical sketch should be submitted together with the paper on the
Precision Conference website. Please note that submissions to the GSS,
unlike submissions to the other venues, are not anonymous.

Participants will be selected based on their anticipated contributions to
the breadth and depth of the intellectual discussions in the symposium. All
students will be expected to give a short presentation of their work,
followed by discussion with the panel and the other student participants.

Financial support MAY be available for graduate students with successful
submissions to attend the GSS and conference.

Format and Submission Details

Submissions should be up to 4-pages long (extra pages allowed for
citations) following the ACM SIGCHI extended abstract template
<https://sigchi.org/templates/>. The total size of all submitted materials,
including a video figure, should not exceed 100 Mb. If you are unsure of
what constitutes a well-formed submission, please review the examples in
the ACM Digital Library for our 2017 conference. The submission should
include:

   -

A four-page written paper in SIGCHI Extended Abstracts format. Page
limit excludes references. Submissions should NOT be anonymous.
   -

A brief letter of support from the student’s principal adviser.
   -

A brief biographical sketch (2-3 paragraphs) together with a list of any
   relevant publications.
   -

A draft of a poster describing the work (submitted as a supplementary
document, not included in the 4-page limit).

Where to Submit

Please submit via the Precision Conference (PCS) website. The link will be
available soon.

Video figures (optional)

Video figures may accompany a paper submission for the purpose of review.
They are strongly encouraged but not required. The CHI
<https://chi2018.acm.org/guide-to-submitting-a-video-as-supplemental-material>
and UIST <https://uist.acm.org/uist2018/video-guide> guides to producing
video figures are useful.
