Special Issue on 3D User Interfaces
IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, November/December 2009

Submissions due: 31 March 2009

3D user interfaces (3D UIs) have a long tradition in several specific  
application domains such as virtual reality and augmented reality  
environments, digital content creation (DCC) systems, CAD systems, and  
visualization systems. Such interfaces are also beginning to appear in  
operating systems, personal digital assistants, and mobile phones. The  
game industry has embraced 3D input as well (as with Nintendo’s Wii).  
Even 3D cinema has started making a comeback, and stereoscopic  
versions of movies are being produced on a regular basis. New  
television systems often include 3D functionality. It seems that  
hardware, software, and, in particular, users are ready to deal with a  
computer-generated 3D world and the corresponding 3D UIs.

As a result, the 3D UI community has been significantly expanding. It  
established its own research forum, the IEEE Symposium on 3D User  
Interfaces, in 2006. This special issue on 3D UIs is another outlet  
for the rapid developments in this area. It will consist of a tutorial  
on important aspects of 3D UIs and a number of high-quality articles  
selected from submissions in all areas of 3D UIs, including, but not  
limited to, these topics:

	• 3D input devices;
	• 3D display devices;
	• 3D interaction techniques;
	• 3D UI metaphors;
	• 3D UIs for games, CAD, DCC, and other application domains;
	• applications of 3D UI techniques;
	• collaborative 3D interaction;
	• desktop 3D UIs;
	• mobile 3D UIs;
	• 3D UI toolkits and infrastructure;
	• design and evaluation methods for 3D UIs;
	• case studies of 3D UIs in real-world use;
	• 3D UI surveys; and
	• visions for the field of 3D UIs.
Articles should be no more than 10 magazine pages, where a page is 800  
words and an image counts as 200 words. Citations should consist of  
the 12 most relevant references. Background for nonexpert readers can  
be provided in sidebars. Color images can be interspersed through the  
article and should be limited to a total of 10. Visit the IEEE

For an expanded workshop or conference paper, provide a citation to  
the original publication, then briefly summarize (50 words or fewer)  
what new material you have added for this submission (at least 25  
percent). This must include new results or insights, not just  
additional description.
