===================CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUE====================

                           TEMPORAL ASPECTS OF USABILITY:
The relevance of time to the development and use of
                                    human-computer systems

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
A special issue of Interacting with Computers, the interdisciplinary
 journal of human-computer interaction.
 =============================================================

                              CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The General Editorial and Management Board of the journal Interacting
with Computers seeks contributions to a special issue of the journal to
focus on the relationship between time, and the development and use of
interactive computer based systems.

FOCUS
The focus of the special issue, Temporal Aspects of Usability, will be
on the relationship between time and the development and use of
interactive computer based systems.

One current area of concern with interactive computer based systems is
the temporal aspects of usability. For example, systems that do not inform
their users how long they are going to be in completing an operation, or that
sometimes complete an operation quickly, and at other times very slowly, may
be guilty of 'temporal un-usability'. The use of real time distributed
computing, groupware and the world wide web too often equates to frustration
and confusion on the part of the systems' users, partly because of the
technologies's inability to communicate temporal information in a way which
is meaningful to users.

Further, there is lacking a coherent body of knowledge and practice for
designers to reason about, capture, model and design for temporal issues.
How should temporal information be supported and/or represented at the
interface? What methods and tools are available to designers in designing for
temporal aspects of human-computer interaction?

The editors invite submissions on any topic that addresses temporal
aspects of usability. The special issue will address successes,
failures and possibilities of interfaces that support the temporal
aspects of users' tasks, and of development methods that support the
engineering of the temporal aspects of usability. Specific areas that
may be addressed include: notations for capturing temporal aspects of
tasks, e.g. task duration, frequency and contingency; interface features
capable of communicating time in usable ways; and psychological models
of time relevant to interface design.

Submissions for the special issue are sought from any field, including
for example, computer science, psychology, mathematics and industrial
research and practice.

TO SUBMIT A PAPER TO THE SPECIAL ISSUE
- Send an expression of interest to the guest editors at Swinburne
University (Melbourne, Australia) to be received no later than 22nd June
1997. Expressions of interest should include a one page abstract of the
paper and full contact address, including email and fax details.
- In reply to the expression of interest, complete submission details
will be sent to you.
- Examine the IwC web site (http//www.elsevier.nl/locate/intcom) for
further information on the journal, paper types and guidelines for authors.
- Send your submission to the Editors (NOT the Journal). Your
submission must be received in Melbourne by 1st September, 1997.
- Final revisions will be due by the 11th January, 1998.

TO ACT AS A REFEREE FOR THE SPECIAL ISSUE
- By email, send an expression of interest to the guest editors at
Swinburne University (Melbourne, Australia) to be received no later than
22nd June 1997. Expressions of interest should include a description of
your areas of expertise (specifically related to temporal aspects of
usability) and full contact address, including email and fax details.
- Referees whose offer to review is accepted will be sent IwC's Advice
to Referees.
- Examine the IwC web site (http//www.elsevier.nl/locate/intcom) for
further information on the journal and guidelines for reviewers.
- Please note that IwC expects a four week turn around of articles
distributed for review. The submissions for this special issue are
likely to be reviewed during September and October, 1997. If you
believe that you cannot meet this requirement, please do not offer to
review.
