(apologies for cross-posting)
The University of Oldenburg, Germany, offers from April 1st, 2008 a
PhD scholarship to applicants with excellent study results in
Computer Science or closely related disciplines.
Phd scholarship - Pervasive automotive user interfaces for car
navigation and orientation
In recent years, we have been facing a rapid development of in-car
information systems. At the same time interfaces in cars have become
more complex and traffic complexity has increased. So far the main
user interface metaphor was using visual displays, haptic knobs and
buttons as well as speech in- and output. Given recent work in the
field it can be assumed that other modalities such as haptics and
ambient sound can be used as an additional channel for information
visualization while remaining unobtrusive and not straining the
cognitive load. In this field, we aim to advance our existing work in
the field of non-visual user interfaces for navigation and
orientation for the blind and transfer it into the automotive domain
where the visual sense is mainly occupied with the driving task. This
includes requirements engineering, design of information
representation, user interface design as well as evaluation of the
developed system in a simulation environment.
PhD scholarships will be provided at Euro 1,365.- per month plus Euro
103.- for non-personal costs. This is the net income; no taxes are
raised on these scholarships. Surcharges are allotted based on
marital status and number of children. Scholarships will be granted
for up to three years. The program is financed by the German Research
Foundation (DFG) and supported by industrial corporations. For more
information on entrance requirements and admission procedure please
contact the chair of the graduate school (address below) and refer to
