IEEE AIME2012: The Second IEEE International Workshop on Interactive
Ambient Intelligence Multimedia Environments (AIME),

http://www.discover.uottawa.ca/aime2012

in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo
(ICME 2012), Melbourne, Australia

======================================================================

Interactive Ambient Intelligence Multimedia Environments (AIME) has the
vision of enhancing our everyday environment and our interaction with its
objects by sensing, computing, and communication capabilities. As
pervasive devices grow in complexity and sophistication, they become harder
and harder to use, particularly because of their tiny display screens and
limited interfaces. At the same time, devices will disappear or blend into
the background and will be invisible to the user. However, because of this
transparency, users fail to develop an adequate mental concept for AIME
and its interaction concept. To overcome these challenges, new interaction
models are required. How can one interact with tiny devices that do not
provide their own user interfaces? Or how to find and access devices that
are invisible to the user? How to access physical devices in an unfamiliar
environment without having knowledge about the technical infrastructure?

In such environments, multimedia play two key roles: they support new ways
of interaction that apply to multiple human senses, and they diffuse the
presentation of content in the environment of the user.

Facing these challenges is a community-spanning effort, necessitating the
pooling of resources and experiences of different research groups. The aim
of this workshop thus is to provide a link (1) between different research
groups and (2) between the academic communities and industry groups that
work in the AIME area.

Topics of interes

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Multi-modality: the ability of ad-hoc utilization of various categories
of sensors (camera, microphone, accelerometer, etc.) for recognition of
gesture, voice, mimic, and haptic input

2. Multimedia: multi-modal output coordination, dynamic distribution of
multi-modal representations/dialogues among available multimedia devices

3. Multi-device interaction: the ability of using any available interaction
device to control any other device, such as multimedia equipment, household
appliances, or lecture room infrastructure.

4. Smart Multimedia sensors: the ability to capture, store, and process
audio and video signals for situation recognition and implicit interaction
purposes. This specially includes human activity recognition and monitoring
as well as socially-aware multimedia

5. Human-centric interaction: natural interaction for allowing users an
easy access to multimedia environments (search, exploration, manipulation
and control of media and devices), touch and gesture based interfaces, 3D
displays and audio immersive systems for augmented-reality.

6. Mixed-initiative ambient environments: metaphors and coordination
algorithms for distributed conflict management, mechanisms that allow users
an explicit interaction with adaptive environments.

7. Transparency and Predictability: visualization and animation of sensing
activities, decisions, and implicit interactions of ambient intelligent
systems, which allows users to understand and predict the behavior of the
system.

8. Device independency: device-independent realization of multi-modal
interaction, such as voice and gesture recognition.

9. Evaluation issues: how to evaluate the added-value of multimedia
assisted interaction compared to other advanced approaches for ambient
interaction, e.g., video-based gesture interaction vs. hardware-based
gestures.

10. Implementation issues: novel approaches to effectively manage the
complexity of development, Real-time, de-centralized media-processing
architectures, Middleware architectures for sensor and multimedia
integration.

11. Applications: Ambient advertising and persuasive technologies, ambient
games, ambient intelligent environments for education, Ambient presentation
of arts and cultural heritage,

Paper selection process:

Papers submitted to AIME must not have been previously published and must
not be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors are
invited to submit a full paper (two-column format, up to 6 pages, including
figures and tables) according to the guidelines available on the conference
website at http://www.icme2012.org/PaperSubmission_index.php.

Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Papers will be reviewed with
an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state-of-the-art in the
field. Each paper will receive at least two reviews. Selection criteria
include accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and significance of
results, and presentation quality. All papers accepted will appear in the
main conference proceedings and will be included in the IEEE Xplore Library.

Important Dates:

Submission Deadline: 05.03.2012

Acceptance Notification: 26.03.2011

Camera Ready: 09.04.2011
