Maria Francesca Costabile and Fabio Paterno describe the history of SIGCHI
Italy in, "SIGCHI Italy: the Italian path to improving human-computer
interaction," in the May-June 2001 issue of SIGCHI Bulletin.

Here is a sampling of more of what is happening in the world of CHI Local SIGs:

Africa

  Chartered chapter in this geography: CHI-SA.

  CHI-SA is organizing the CHI 2002 Development Consortium which
  will focus on the HCI in South Africa.

Americas (outside the U.S.)

  Chartered chapters in this geography: Brazil CHI, CapCHI, ToRCHI,
  VanCHI, WatCHI (student), and CHI-Mexico.  Prospective chapter:
  SIGCHI Chile.

  Members of Brazil CHI participated in the CHI 2001 Development
  Consortium focused on HCI in Latin America.

  CapCHI's next meeting will present, "Supporting Casual Interaction
  between Intimate Collaborators."  Speaker: Saul Greenberg; date:
  May 14.  CapCHI is also offering a full-day tutorial on June 1:
  "Understanding User's Work in Context: Practical Observation Skills"
  by Susan Dray.

  ToRCHI is co-hosting two events featuring Jef Raskin during May.  On
  Friday 11 May, Jef will give a public talk at 11am on, "Making Machines
  Fit for Human Consumption."  On Monday 14 May, Jef will give an
  all-day tutorial on "Universal Principles of Humane Interface Design."

  WatCHI will offer a talk Monday May 7 from Gitte Lindgaard who has
  recently taken the HCI Chair at Carleton University.

  SIGCHI Chile has announced its prospective beginnings.

Asia / Pacific

  Chartered chapters in this geography: CHI South India and SIGCHI_NZ.
  Prospective chapters: SIGCHI Korea and CHI North India.

  SIGCHI Korea has announced its prospective beginnings.

Europe

  Chartered chapters in this geography: SIGCHI Austria, BelCHI,
  BulSIGCHI, Czech SIGCHI, Toulouse SIGCHI, SIGCHI Italy, SIGCHI.NL,
  Universidade Fernando Pessoa SIGCHI (student), CHISPA, and
  SwissCHI.  Prospective chapters: SIGCHI.DK, SIGCHI Finland, German
  SIGCHI, SIGCHI Norway, Poland SIGCHI, SIGCHI Romania, Russia SIGCHI,
  SIGCHI Sweden, and West Sweden CHI.

  BelCHI will kick off chapter activities with an event on Wed. 9 May.
  Four speakers from radically different backgrounds will discuss the
  theme of:"Making the Web Useful, Usable and Enjoyable."  The panel:
  Rolan Merrick of IBM, Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn of
  Entropy8Zuper, and Sim D'Hertefelt of IconMedialab.  Moderator:
  Erik Duval of KULeuven.  Cocktails will follow the meeting.

  SIGCHI.DK: May 7, Bonnie Nardi gives a lecture on "Anthropology and
  HCI."  All Danish anthropologists working with HCI are invited to
  participate in a meeting prior to the lecture by Bonnie Nardi to
  discuss the possible formation of a "Birds-of-a-feather" group on
  anthropology and HCI.

  SIGCHI.NL holds an evening meeting 31 May on "Mobile future -
  UMTS als duurzame ontwerpkans."  Speakers: Annti Laaperi &
  Josephine Green.  Debaters: Kees Vendrik, Wibo Koole, Berent Daan;
  moderator: Collette Alma.

  SwissCHI's next event: May 31: "Finanzportal für KMU's: Lessons
  learned" by Toni Steimle.

United States

  Chartered chapters in this geography: BayCHI, LA-SIGCHI, SanD CHI,
  DC-CHI, CHI-Atlanta, CHI-Squared, LowellCHI (student), GB/SIGCHI,
  MOCHI, TwinCHI, KC-CHI, GatewayCHI, NYC-CHI, TriCHI, BuckCHI,
  CHIFOO, PhiCHI, CHI-Austin, Lone Star CHI, NUCHI, GMU SIGCHI
  (student), Puget Sound SIGCHI, and Milwau-CHI.   Prospective chapters:
  Rocky Mountain CHI, ConnCHI, and ISU SIGCHI.  Point of contact: KATCHI.

  BayCHI's program May 8 starts with a presentation by Neil Grimmer
  of Heart2Heart, winner of a recent Intel student design competition,
  then continues with a presentation by Genevieve Bell of Intel on "Thinking
  Beyond the Box: Using Ethnography in the New (New) Economy."  The
  evening program is preceded by the BayCHI dinner.  BayCHI-North will
  meet May 22: "Color in User Interfaces," Wanda Smith.  BayCHI Usability
  Engineering will meet May 17: "Understanding User Experience: Using
  Ethnography, Contextual Inquiry and other Qualitative Methods," Marijke
  Rijsberman, Nancy Bell, Jared Braiterman, & Kathryn Murrell.  BayCHI
  Web will meet May 24: "High-Tech vs. High-Touch: The Limits of
  Automation in Diagnostic Usability Testing."  BayCHI Kids will host a
  Social the evening of May 22 in San Francisco.

  DC_CHI meets May 15.  Presentation: "Designing Collaborative Virtual
  Environments that Support Cultural Identity and Intercultural
  Communication."  Speaker: Elaine Raybourn of Sandia National
  Laboratories.  A group dinner precedes the meeting.

  CHI-Squared will meet on May 16.  Emilee Patrick from Motorola Labs
  will be describing the Access Grid and some usability issues related to it.

  SIGCHI ISU has announced its prospective beginnings.

  NCR will host the May 22nd meeting of CHI-A in its newly renovated
  facility.  In addition to a formal presentation on some of NCR's hardware,
  software, and work process design and evaluation activities, meeting
  attendees will get guided tours of NCR's new, two-cell usability lab and
  unique Visitor Center as well as demonstrations of a variety of hardware
  and software development projects.

  GB/SIGCHI's next meeting will be the evening of May 8.  Program:
  "Exploration Environments: Learning Support for Groupware" by
  Volker Wulf of the German National Research Institute for Computer
  Science.

  LowellCHI's meeting May 17 will feature a presentation by Dario
  Salvucci from Cambridge Basic Research, Nissan Technical Center on
  "Car Driver Distraction."

  On May 9, MOCHI's meeting will feature a Peter Polson talk about
  "A Model of Web Navigation and Its Application to the Development of
  Web Sites for Diverse User Groups."  MOCHI is also seeking nominations
  for MOCHI officers.

  GatewayCHI's April meeting featured a presentation by Jerry Weinberg
  on "Teaching HCI Using Participatory Methods."

  NUCHI officers are currently working on a meeting for late May.

  BuckCHI will offer "Decision Centered Design" (speaker: Buzz Reed)
  at its May 8 meeting.

  CHIFOO's next meeting: May 24.  Joe Auer will present, "Techniques in
  Rapid Prototyping."  The meeting will be preceded with CHIFOOD and
  CHIFOON.

  CHI-Austin will meet May 14 at Landmark Graphics for a roundtable
  discussion of marketing usability/HCI in an economic downturn.

  Puget Sound SIGCHI will meet May 23 and feature a presentation by
  Jared Spool on "Usability and the Holy Grail."
