                           Advanced Visual Interfaces
                        International Working Conference
In cooperation with ACM-SIGCHI, ACM-SIGMM, SIGCHI Italy

                                  Venice, Italy
                               May 23-26, 2006

The 8th International Working Conference on Advanced Visual
Interfaces (AVI
2006) will be held in Venice, Italy, May 23-26, 2006. Started in 1992
in Rome,
and held every two years in different Italian towns, the Conference
traditionally brings together experts in different areas of computer
who have a common interest in the conception, design and
implementation of
visual and, more generally, perceptual interfaces, with a growing
interest for
mobile devices such as smartphones, palmtops and PDAs, in the
framework of
traditional and emerging environments, such as ubiquitous and pervasive
computer applications. A special theme of this edition, suggested by the
beautiful town hosting the conference, will be the design of advanced
interfaces for art, cultural heritage and tourism. Both formal
methods and
concrete applications well fit into the framework of the conference,
program also includes invited talks, given by leaders in the field.

Research and system papers:
 - abstract submission deadline December 19, 2005 (extended, strict)
 - full paper submission deadline December 23, 2005 (extended, strict)
 - acceptance notification February 15, 2006
Short papers:
 - submission deadline January 15, 2006
 - acceptance notification March 1, 2006

Demo software due: April 20, 2006
AVI 2006 Conference: May 23-26, 2006

                             PAPER AND DEMO SUBMISSION

We strongly encourage submissions that address research and development
on the above and other related topics, or that propose new approaches
suitable for fulfilling the demands that characterize advanced
interfaces of
the next generation. Three kinds of contribution are solicited:

 - Research papers, describing original and unpublished work about the
above or closely related topics. Papers should not exceed 8
pages in
    ACM SIG Proceedings format (
 - Short papers describing promising work in progress. Short papers
should not exceed 4 pages in ACM SIG Proceedings format, and
might be
presented at the conference as posters.
 - System papers (prototypes demonstrations), up to 4 pages in ACM SIG
Proceedings format. System papers will be accompanied by a
demonstration of the software prototype, and should include a
description of hw/sw requirements on a separate
sheet. Demonstrators may either use their personal laptops, or
a full working version of accepted prototypes, ready for

Papers will be submitted electronically. An abstract of about 100
words and topics
classification are required. Detailed information on electronic
are provided at the AVI 2006 web site:
At least one author is required to attend the conference and present
the paper.
Paper and Demo descriptions presented at the Conference will be
included in the
Proceedings published by ACM Press (approval pending).

The Exhibit Program will primarily consist of demonstrations of software
prototypes. The demonstration proposal should include a detailed
description specifying hw/sw requirements. If demonstrators do not
provide their
personal equipment, a full working version of accepted prototypes
must be available
for installation by April 20, 2006.
