Vacancy:-

Project Officer (RA): MANTCHI

There is a vacancy for a Project Officer to support the
technical aspects of the MANTCHI project (MAN-based
Tutoring in Computer-Human Interaction).  Candidates
should have knowledge of WWW-based applications and
good programming skills. Familiarity with any of the
following would be an additional advantage:

* Human-Computer Interaction
* Computer Supported Collaborative Work
* Computer Based Learning
* Desktop Videoconferencing

The starting salary will be in the range £ 14317 to £ 15986
on the Research Scale.

The MANTCHI Project

The MANTCHI project is funded by the Scottish Higher Education
Funding Council (SHEFC) under the Use of MANs Initiative.
The lead institution for the project is Glasgow Caledonian
University. The other partners are Heriot-Watt University,
Napier University and the University of Glasgow.

The project has been funded for 19 months from January 1997 to
July 1998. It will develop the technology to support
collaborative task-based tutorial teaching over two Metropolitan
Area Networks (MANs): ClydeNet covers the Glasgow metropolitan
area, and EastMAN covers the east of Scotland. The technical
development will be based on WWW-based implementations of
Ackerman & Malone's Answergarden concept. These tools were
trialled in two previous projects, INTERACT and MARBLE, each
of which involved some of the partners in the present MANTCHI
project. In MANTCHI we shall extend the work to remote online
tutorials, and we shall use videoconferencing in conjunction with
other hypermedia techniques.

The Context

The project builds on a strong established tradition in
Human-Computer Interaction in the partner universities,
in particular

* GIST (the Glasgow Interactive Systems group) [Glasgow]
* The CSCW and Distributed Applications Group [Caledonian]
* The Centre for Learning and Teaching Innovation [Caledonian]
* The Institute for Computer Based Learning [Heriot-Watt]

and on the support for innovation in the use of broadband
networks provided by SHEFC through TalisMAN. This combination
will provide a stimulating and supportive environment for
the project officer's work.

The person appointed will initially be based at Glasgow
Caledonian University until 31 Jan or 28 Feb 1998, and it
is envisaged he/she would then transfer to Glasgow University
for the remaining 5 months of the project.

Further details of the project are at
