Postdoctoral Position: Interdisciplinary Research in Human-Computer
Interaction / Collaborative Learning / Educational Technology
A junior partner is sought for a federally funded project examining the
effects of educational software interfaces on collaborative learning. The
independent variable is several alternate representations (diagrams, lists,
tables, ...) for recording and examining relationships between data and
hypotheses. We will test the hypothesis that differences in the "bias" of
these representations - how they make certain information salient - will have
significant effects on learners' discourse and on learning outcomes. Subjects
will work in small groups on recent natural science issues while using
software-based representational tools. Experiments are planned for subjects
interacting in person as well as electronically over a network. Dependent
variables include the kinds of information sought, attended to, and elaborated
on as evidenced by subjects' dialogue and gestures, and measures of short term
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in computer science, psychology, instructional
technology, or related discipline. Prior experience with empirical methods of
psychology or human-computer interaction.
Training Provided: Guidance in development of the following knowledge and
skills will be provided as needed: Theoretical understanding of the role of
external representations in mediating and guiding learning; Familiarity with
open research issues; Experimental and statistical methods (candidate should
have some prior experience); Discourse coding methods; Design of next
generation technologies for learning.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will assist with the design of the
experiments; help recruit subjects; run the experimental sessions with
subjects; assist in coding transcripts of the data; assist with statistical
analyses and interpretation of results; and co-author publications.

Minimum Stipend: $35,000/year
Funding: National Science Foundation, Learning and Intelligent Systems.
Closing Date: December 8, 1998
Start Date: Approximately February 1, 1999 (negotiable).
Duration of Appointment: Minimum commitment of one year. Renewable through
September 30, 2001 pending performance and renewal of federal funding.
