This research project has funding attached. Funding for this project is available to citizens of a number of European countries (including the UK). In most cases this will include all EU nationals. An inherent human characteristic exists whereby we are able to process sensory information more efficiently in the auditory domain. An Auditory Display is a system that aims to take advantage of this common trait and map chosen data sets to an audible output; which has been proven useful in revealing features from data that can be obfuscated in visualization tools. These systems have been deployed successfully to a diverse set of applications from volcanic activity analysis to medical research. This proposal is for a project in the area of the sonification of brain activity or sonifying data obtained with a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). 
The design of a generic software EEG sonification involves several stages: (a) Data Model - Low level structuring of the multi-dimensional data read from the BCI, (b) User Interaction Model - The interface needs to be accessible to a non-technical user to allow for a diverse user base, (c) Synthesis Model - This sonification level is the core of an Auditory Display system. It will map the underlying data to sound properties such as pitch and duration, according to the user interaction level. It needs to be flexible enough to accommodate any standard sonification technique, and (d) Rendering Model - This stage applies the high level audio synthesis to the processed data from the previous level. 
The evaluation of this system involves testing the software alongside currently used methods, such as visualisation, with potential users of this system. The design and evaluation of this software is based on off-the-shelf hardware and the software will be made publicly available online. The software is expected to allow a better understanding of noisy EEG signals and the interpretation of the brainwave data. This project create opportunities to collaborate with the Colleges of Engineering and Medicine in Swansea University. 

Applicant requirements 

The applicant is expected to have a strong background in high level programming (e.g. C#), signal processing (experience of using Matlab) and system evaluation.

- A  completed application form for admission to a PhD in Computer Science – submitted via the online admissions portal. (Please specify a PhD in Computer Science with Swansea University funding and project title) 
- Applicants should use the ‘Additional Supporting Information’ section of the application form to explain why the nominated award they have chosen particularly appeals to them and how they would choose to develop it 
- Academic References – all admissions applications require two references to be submitted in support. Please ensure that your chosen referees are aware of the funding deadline, as we will be using these to help us evaluate your scholarship application 
- Academic Transcripts – where applicable, academic transcripts must be submitted with the online admissions application by the funding deadline. We will be using these to verify your academic qualifications

Funding Notes:

This project is eligible for a fully-funded Swansea University PhD Scholarship. The scholarship will commence in September 2012 and will cover Home/EU tuition fees and a stipend of £13,590 per annum for three years. This scholarship is available for Home/EU applicants only.
