7th Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT)

University of Cambridge
United Kingdom
24th – 27th March 2014
CWUAAT '14 is the seventh of a series of workshops started in 2002 that represent the inclusive design community. CWUAAT is a unique multi-disciplinary workshop, where designers, computer scientists, engineers, architects, ergonomists, policymakers and user communities meet.

In the context of developing demographic changes leading to greater numbers of older people and people with disabilities, the general field of inclusive design research strives to relate the capabilities of the population to the design of products. Inclusive populations of older people contain a greater variation in sensory, cognitive and physical user capabilities. These variations may be co-occurring and rapidly changing, leading to a demanding design environment. Inclusive Design Research involves developing methods, technologies, tools and guidance for supporting product designers and architects to design for the widest possible population for a given range of capabilities, within a contemporary social and economic context.

Recent research developments have addressed these issues in the context of: governance and policy; daily living activities; the workplace; the built environment, Interactive Digital TV and Mobile communications. Increasingly, a need has been identified for a multidisciplinary approach that reconciles the diverse and sometimes conflicting demands of Design for Aging and Impairment, Usability and Accessibility and Universal Access. CWUAAT provides a platform for such a need.
We seek original research papers describing investigations within the following broad categories:

  1. RECONCILING USABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVE DESIGN
  2. DESIGNING INCLUSIVE ASSISTIVE AND REHABILITATION SYSTEMS
  3. MEASURING PRODUCT DEMAND AND PEOPLES’ CAPABILITIES
  4. DESIGNING COGNITIVE INTERACTION WITH EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
  5. DESIGNING INCLUSIVE SPACES: ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDINGS
  6. DATA MINING AND VISUALISING INCLUSION : USER PROFILE DATA
  7. LEGISLATION, STANDARDS AND POLICY IN INCLUSIVE DESIGN

Deadline for submission of long and short papers, poster abstracts: July 1, 2013
Notification of paper acceptance: 10 September, 2013
Deadline for camera-ready version of submitted papers: 10 October, 2013
Advance registration (ends): 16 January, 2014
Late registration (ends): 20 February, 2014
CWUAAT Workshop: 24 - 27 March, 2014

CWUAAT aims to solicit:

·          Long papers (6-10 pages), reporting original work relevant to the workshop themes;

· Short papers/Poster presentations/ Demonstrations (1-2 pages abstract, 3-4 pages for camera-ready copy).

· Accepted long papers will be published as chapters of a book by Springer-Verlag, UK as part of the Inclusive Design hardback book series. Poster and Short papers will be published separately in the official conference proceedings.

The CWUAAT Workshops are held at a Cambridge University College every two years. The workshops are characterised by a single session running over three days in pleasant surrounding with delegates from home and abroad staying on site at Fitzwilliam College. Set in spacious and attractive grounds near the centre of Cambridge, Fitzwilliam encapsulates this rare blend of history and innovation, living up to its heraldic motto of providing "the best of the old and the new”. Fitzwilliam College has ample car parking and is easily accessible from all major routes, avoiding the narrow streets of the historic centre. With its purpose-built meeting rooms and bedrooms designed around traditional courts, its history of service and up to date business facilities, the College is a testament to its motto.

Paper format details are available on the conference web-site. All papers will be peer reviewed and the accepted papers will be presented during the workshop. The best papers will be invited to a special issue of two Journals. One special issue will focus on Technology papers and the other special issue will focus on Architecture and Public Space papers.

Electronic submission of papers will be available via the conference web-site:
http://www-edc.eng.cam.ac.uk/cwuaat

Doctoral Consortium. As one of the most successful aspects of CWUAAT ‘10, the event in 2014 will again include a Doctoral Consortium. Candidates who submit to the doctoral consortium will be able to attend the workshop at a greatly reduced registration. The two presentations judged to be the best by the consortium panel will win a podium presentation in the main workshop.
A 2 Hr training session on practical inclusive design will be held on Monday the 24th, following the Doctoral consortium. This will take people through a task analysis and demand assessment exercise, and will involve using simulator glasses to assess visual demands.
Demonstrations. Participants will be able to gain hands-on experience with working systems. Space and time will be available for demonstrations of software and hardware.

User Forum: CWUAAT 2014 will contain a single paper session allocated as a user forum. This is intended to give users of assistive technology and beneficiaries of improved accessibility an opportunity for an oral presentation of 25 minutes. Both short and long papers will be accepted in this category and topics and themes are not restricted. We welcome academic position papers, social and research agendas, critiques of provision of technology or poor accessibility, engineering or technical papers regarding product design and usage in work and daily living.
