New Details

We have been fortunate in securing speakers who cover a wide range:

* from major corporations to micro-businesses
* from highly commercial to public sector
* Creative Directors, Senior Designers, MDs and independent artists
* several interactive media industry sectors

From 10:30: Internal speakers
The day will begin with two presentations of recent student/research
projects at the Centre which, while playfully experimental, have led to
publication at prestigious academic conferences. Both stretch the boundaries
of interaction design.

One -- Smell Me -- constructs a game around computer-generated odours. The
other -- 'Ere be Dragons -- is a highly innovative pervasive game played on
mobile devices which respond both to location and to the player's heart
beat. This is an opportunity to catch up with recent advances in the design
of interactive media.

From 12:00: External speakers
We expect presentations from individuals at Motorola, Sky, Culture Online,
MRM Worldwide, Milo Creative, Kibook, On101, Illumina Digital, as well as by
Alex Mayhew, digital artist and researcher.

[Please note that modifications to the speaker programme may occur.]

What the Symposium is about
The Lansdown Centre offers a free one-day research symposium addressing the
question of how creative, arts-based education prepares graduates for their
subsequent lives as designers of interactive media. Through this event, we
aim to publicly reflect on our own work. The symposium participants are all
graduates of the Centre's long-established course, MA/MSc Design for
Interactive Media. Now working mainly but not exclusively in industry, they
will review the education they received in the light of their experience.

The symposium and associated exhibition explore the range and variety of
interactive media from commercial projects to experimental work. By having
the symposium coincide with the graduation exhibition of our current
Mastersı students, we aim to bring together the goal-oriented world of work
with the open-ended innovative culture of an Arts-based education. How well
does such a programme prepare its students for their future lives?

To find out about the Exhibition visit http://www.a-museshow.co.uk

This symposium will be of value to industry practitioners, educators, and
anyone interested in the future of media.
