NordiCHI 2008 :: About
=================================================
How can we understand the impact of Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) on people,
companies and society? How can we explore, design
and implement ICT so that it will match the needs
and requirements of authentic users? How can we
raise a critical and constructive debate about
the emergent trends streaming from an increased
everyday use of ICT?
NordiCHI is:
- The main Nordic forum for human-computer
interaction research, with the Conference
proceedings published by ACM.
- The meeting place for researchers, designers,
practitioners, educators and others from a broad
range of traditions and communities.
- Biannual and has previously been held in
Stockholm (2000), Aarhus (2002), Tampere (2004)
and Oslo (2006).
Traditionally, the NordiCHI Conferences address
topics such as: technology in use, integration of
design and use, user participation in design,
aesthetic factors in interac¨tion and design,
exploratory design activities, and
inter-disciplinary approaches to HCI. These foci
originate in the Nordic tradition of openness to
new approaches and divergent ideas in the
development of new concepts and practices for the
future.
The theme of NordiCHI 2008 is that of Using
Bridges: A key challenge that our every¨day
culture raises is to find better ways to combine
theory and practice. Bridging is, furthermore,
required to take place on many levels:
individual-to-individual, many-to-many,
culture-to-culture, region-to-region,
human-to-artifact, mankind-to-technology,
artifact-to-artifact. The vision is, also, that
NordiCHI 2008 will enable the meeting of cultures
within HCI, which points not only to
geographically distinct cultures, but to
academia, industry and public life as well.
Important aspects include how Internet and open
digital resources may generate an increased
exchange of ideas and wealth, and how new
communicative patterns can increase the flow of
public debates.
Thus, the main thread is the Using Bridges theme,
including not only user interaction aspects
before and during the design process but also
experiences of everyday use. NordiCHI 2008
proposes an interdisciplinary exploration of the
everyday impacts of digital culture. Starting
from the premise that digital culture is no
longer novel, but rather a given, the Conference
seeks to open a space for a ìsecond waveî of
analysis, criticism and practice. For example: Is
blogging only a temporary contemporary hype? How
do digital phenomena such as You Tube, Flickr and
Facebook affect our media consumption? What
impact can online gaming have on the way we
perform work? How can seamless integration of
paper and digital content that is accessible for
all people in a society be enabled? How can the
workplace and the mobile world be bridged to
enable flexible and efficient work conditions as
well as improved quality of life? There is a
strong regional interest in such issues since the
÷resund Region is now expanding with digital
media as an integral and natural part of that
development.
NordiCHI 2008 accepts contributions in several
categories. The technical program is the backbone
of the Conference, inviting original,
high-quality full and short papers, design cases,
tutorials, workshops, industrial experience
reports and interactive demos to generate and
sustain interactive cooperation among the
Conference participants and to stimulate
dissemination of new results.
Conference topics include but are not limited to:
- Adaptive and adaptable systems
- Affective computing
- Ambient intelligence
- Artistic and aesthetic aspects of interaction and interface design
