Please forward the following to your students and others who may be interested.

===========

The Open University has fully funded full-time PhD studentships in the area of HCI/Physical computing available from Oct 2013.

We want to hear from candidates who are interested in developing technologies and creating innovative user experiences for the following user groups:

Physical interaction for accessibility – users who are denied access through standard input mechanisms (keyboard, mouse and screen) have much to gain from the new range of sensors and technologies that have been developed over the last 10 years. How can technologies that enable different forms of interaction - through gestures, movement, changes in temperature or through breathing in and out - be used to create novel user experiences that go beyond solving accessibility issues?

Well-being and health for musicians– many musicians suffer serious injuries due to posture problems during practice. How can technologies make musicians more aware of their posture and help them adopt healthier ways of exercising?

The above topics are indicative of the type of project we would like to support, but the student can formulate their own project. It would be an advantage if you have experience in working with Arduino, LilyPad or other forms of wearable physical computing platforms and experience in user-centred approaches to research.

Please contact Dr Janet van der Linden (j.vanderlinden @ open.ac.uk) for an informal discussion and advice on a suitable proposal. Further details of related research at the OU can be found at http://mcs.open.ac.uk/pervasive/index.html

Application forms and general advice on PhD proposals can be found at:

http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/research-degrees/explained/how_to_apply/mphil_and_phd_applications.htm

Closing date: March 31st 2013.
