2nd CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop on
DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN THE CONTEXT OF
USERS' BROADER ACTIVITIES
June 15, 2006

Held in conjunction with the
Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2006)
June 11-15, 2006 - Chapel Hill, NC, USA

http://www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/events/dl-cuba2006/

===Second Call for Papers===

The DL-CUBA workshop aims to bring together researchers with an
interest in digital library design, information retrieval, information
seeking and use in context, to exchange ideas and insights on the use
of digital libraries in the broader context of users' activities.

Surprisingly little of the work on understanding information seeking
and the design of digital libraries has taken much account of the
background of the users or the context within which they are working.
There is also little interaction between those who study information
seeking and information retrieval. The DL-CUBA workshop seeks to
cross these boundaries and address how digital libraries (and related
information sources) are used and also how such systems fit into
people's broader activities. Without such an understanding, it is a
matter of chance as to whether new systems that are developed actually
meet the needs of their users.

===Topics of interest===

Papers and position statements are invited on, but not limited
to:

* Integration of digital library infrastructure with systems that
support other work tasks or activities: writing, structuring
information, problem diagnosis, annotation etc.

* Domain-specific studies of information use in context that can
inform design: in health, law, humanities, education, etc.

* Design of digital libraries or components designed to support
particular user needs.

* Usability studies that account for broader work tasks or activities.

===Workshop Format===

Both regular papers and position statements will be reviewed by the
program committee for inclusion in the workshop proceedings. From the
proceedings, the committee will make a selection of about 10 regular
papers for presentation at the workshop. Some time will be set aside
for 5-minute presentations of position statements. Position
statements are not compulsory for attendees, but are encouraged to
improve workshop participation.

The workshop proceedings will be distributed in hard copy during the
workshop and via the website. The theme will be continued in a
special issue of Information Processing & Management, to which
workshop participants will be invited to contribute.

===Submissions===

Regular papers should be up to 4 pages in length and position
statements up to 1 page. Authors should use the ACM SIG proceedings
template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html).
Portable Document Format (*.pdf) files are preferred. See the web
page for submission details.
