The workshop sets out to continue ongoing conversations about the role of design methods and designed artefacts within the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). In continuation of two previous workshops (in conjunction with RO-MAN’20 & HRI’21), in this edition, we propose to make use of Annotated Portfolios as a way to learn from existing robotics artefacts and generate design knowledge relevant to the HRI field. The aim of the workshop is to critically engage with existing HRI artefacts and unpack how these might help the HRI community to integrate designerly ways of knowing.

During the workshop we will have a mix of participant presentations, invited talks and “hands-on” activities. Jonas Löwgren, Professor of Interaction and Information Design at Linköping University, will introduce the topic of design knowledge production and the concept of Annotated Portfolio. We further invited three HRI experts and designers who will present their own collection of robotic artefacts: Guy Hoffman (Cornell University), Wendy Ju (Cornell Tech) and Sonya Kwak (Korea Institute of Science and Technology). In the follow-up activity, workshop participants will be invited to use the Annotated Portfolio method to extract HRI design knowledge from both their own and the work of our speakers (`the collection owners’).

How to Participate

In order to participate, you will be asked to submit a pictorial (2-5 pages including references) using the workshop templates, and submit via email at: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The submission deadline is onJan 30th, 2022. We are excited to bring together a diverse set of researchers from Human-Robot Interaction and Human-Computer Interaction fields, Design Research and any other discipline relevant to HRI, interested in learning more about the conceptually generative power of design and Annotated Portfolios methodology.

Workshop participants are required to register for the workshop through the HRI website<https://humanrobotinteraction.org/2022/>. It will be possible to only register for our workshop in case you wish not to attend the main conference. Information about the registration process is expected to be announced on the HRI website soon.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions! More details about the call for pictorials can be found at: <http://rtdxhri.com> designerlyhri.com
