I intend to moderate an Informal SIG at CHI2001.

"Usability in the Org Chart: Comparing Places for User Experience
Professionals"

Does it pay to have a separate User Experience group in the organization? Or
does it isolate the experts and prevents the formation of multidisciplinary
teams? Is it a Good Thing to be close to the Creative Department if its
members determine the look & feel of a product? Or is it true that Usability
Specialists are from Mars and Graphic Designers are from Venus? Do all
companies need a separate UX department, or just the interactive agencies?
Are the arguments the same for project vs. product organizations?

SIG GOALS
Organizations can learn from each other by comparing situational parameters
and proposed solutions. The SIG aims to bring together user experience
specialists who would like to discuss the options for putting User
Experience groups in the organizational chart. Inspired by examples, a few
important topics could be discussed and hopefully some generalizations (or
even guidelines?) could be made.

SIG PROGRAM
1. Kick-off by moderator
2. Invited short presentations
3. Quick brainstorm on interesting topics
4. Discussions on selected topics
5. Conclusions
6. Next steps

PRE-CHI DISCUSSION
To facilitate discussion before the actual event, I have set up a
Yahoo!Group at:
        http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UsabilityInOrgChart
        (Yahoo! registration might be necessary)

After an initial announcement, 30 members have subscribed. Polls are open,
discussion topics are welcome! A full SIG Proposal is in the "Files"
section. Feel free to contribute.
