Special edition of Springer's Cognition, Technology and Work on:
Human Error and Medical Systems
Human error in the management and operation of healthcare systems is an
increasing focus for public concern. Clinicians are being presented with
increasingly complex user interfaces to diagnostic and therapeutic systems.
At the same time, their managers are being faced with the challenge of
purchasing, maintaining and integrating new systems into already
complex operational structures. These factors raise profound issues that
affect systems engineering, clinical training, managerial control
and incident reporting.
Many of these issues were emphasised by the recent <a href="http://stills.nap.ed
u/html/to_err_is_human/">US Institute of Medecine Reprort</a>.
This special edition will provide a forum
for practitioners and researchers to present leading edge techniques
that can be used to assess and mitigate the impact of human error with
complex clinical systems.
Suitable topics include, but are not restricted to, the following areas:
- use of cognitive modelling to support the analysis of human
error in medical systems;
- use of incident reporting techniques to identify and mitigate
instances of human error;
- use of observational and workplace studies to improve our
understanding of managerial and organisational sources of error;
- integration of human error analysis and constructive design
techniques in clinical settings.
Authors should submit draft papers to Chris Johnson, see below, to arrive
no later than Friday May 5th 2000. Papers can be submittied
electronically or in paper format. The editor will confirm that all
electronic copies have been successfully received.
Authors will be notified of the reviewers' decision and revised papers must
be returned by Friday 4th August for inclusion in the special edition.
