CFP: PDC2014 Workshop on Teaching Participatory Design
(Sunday, Oct 5, 2014 in Windhoek, Namibia)
Workshop website: http://teachingpdworkshop.wordpress.com/
[Overview]:
The goal of the “*Teaching Participatory Design*” full-day workshop at
PDC2014 (http://www.pdc2014.org/) is to create a place where people can
share plans and questions about the practice of teaching Participatory
Design (PD).
Through this workshop we aim to create a context for all of us to talk
about how we design and set up courses, what challenges we face and how we
solve them. The workshop is for people who are interested in the way people
teach as well as in what is taught and what resources are gathered to aid
the process. During the workshop, we will explore in an interactive manner
how constructivist approaches to teaching can support the teaching and
learning of participatory design in academic and non-academic contexts. We
will also discuss experiences in using recent material such as the *PD
Handbook*.
[How to participate]:
Interested participants are invited to submit responses, in the form of a
position paper, to the workshop questions below, which will be reviewed by
the workshop organizers and subsequently shared with participants. Those
responses should be based on experience teaching and/or designing classes
or workshops on Participatory Design. For the workshop it is important to
have material that includes teaching concepts and relevant pedagogy so as
to clarify the relationship between course content and method.
- What was the context of the course (university, community, etc.), who
were the students, how long did it last, and how often have you done it?
What is your own background and interest in this teaching? What particular
questions or challenges did you find? (Max 500 words)
- What materials did you use? If you have a syllabus, please include it.
Or do you have a list of books or readings you drew on? Did you use video
or other media? (Max 500 words)
- What is the way you taught (your pedagogical approach)? Why did you
use this method? (Max 500 words)
- What are your expectations or hopes about the workshop? (Max 500 words)
Your position papers will be shared with all of the workshop participants
on the website before the conference, so that we can all have an idea of
who is coming. We want the workshop to be both practical (addressing issues
and successes) as well as theoretical (raising questions for our field and
thinking about larger issues in PD).
