The Cognitive Science Society is hosting a 2004-2005 virtual colloquium
series with the fourth talk given by Art Markman. Register free at to attend.

Time: Friday, April 8, 2005, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. EST
Presenter: Art Markman, University of Texas

Topic: The Dynamics of Preference and Concern

Cognitive Science research on decision making has often focused on the kinds
of information people process while making choices, with less emphasis on
what people actually choose. Understanding people's choice behavior requires
an exploration of the influence of people's active goals on their
preferences for desirable items and their degree of concern with undesirable
items. The examination of goals is further complicated, because people are
often unaware of the particular goals that are driving their behavior. In
this talk, I sketch a model of the goal system that provides the basis for a
series of studies that examine the influence of goal activation on
preference and concern. This work also demonstrates how patterns of
preferences can be used to map the cognitive structure of goals.
