CALL FOR PARTICIPATION - SenCity2 workshop: "Visualizing the Hidden Pulse of a City"

In conjunction with UbiComp 2015

8th September, 2015
Osaka, Japan

Workshop website:<>

Following on from the success of the first SenCity workshop at UbiComp in 2013, this will be a one-day workshop of hands-on activities, focused on physically visualizing the hidden pulse of the city using actuation and physical mediums. Inter-disciplinary groups will be challenged to design and develop physical visualizations that will represent one or more urban datasets. Ready-to-use datasets and a rapid prototyping toolkit will be provided. The toolkit includes up to 12 different forms of actuation and physical mediums such as light, vibration, movement, smoke, bubbles, etc. that can used alone or in combination to create physical visualizations of the datasets. The toolkit is fully WiFi enabled and pre-configured to provide a ‘plug and play’ experience for workshop participants, enabling them to focus on the design and development of novel forms of physical visualizations, rather than technical issues. In addition to applying practical knowledge and creative flair, groups will also have the chance to display their physical visualizations in urban settings around the Osaka workshop venue to observe and understand how passers-by engage with the visualizations and the data they represent. Participants will be encouraged to consider designs for different urban contexts, designs that merge personal and public data and to what extent designs should ‘blend into’ or ‘stand out from’ their urban background.

Positions at this hands-on workshop are limited. Therefore we invite prospective attendees to submit a position paper and accompanying biography to be considered as a workshop participant. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

· Urban sensing and big data
· Visualizations of complex data from urban sensors or the urban crowd
· Public visualizations
· Ephemeral visualizations and interfaces
· Physical data visualizations
· Rapid prototyping with actuation technologies
· New applications for urban spaces

Workshop candidates are requested to send a position paper of no more than 4 pages in SIGCHI extended abstract format, and must in addition include a short biography detailing their research interests and background. Submissions to this workshop are for participant selection purposes only and will not be subject to full peer review or inclusion in the ACM Digital Library. We have decided to take this approach to allow researchers from all backgrounds and all stages of research to propose ideas without the need to write a fully formed research paper. However, all position papers submitted by successful candidates will be published on the workshop website. Please download and use the required templates to prepare your submission.
