Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments (JAISE): Thematic Issue on Mobility

Guest Editors: Bernd Krieg-Brückner (DFKI GmbH), Christoph Stahl (DFKI GmbH), Wolfgang Zagler (TU Wien), Björn Gottfried (University of Bremen)


Current navigation solutions, as provided by smartphones and cars, are
dedicated to help answering the questions “Where am I?” using GPS and
“What is the route to my destination?” using street maps. This thematic
issue will investigate mobility assistance in a much broader scope,
considering users with special needs (i.e. physical assistance, acces-
sibility and safety), transitions between transportation modes, and
special requirements for indoor environments, such as precise positio-
ning technologies beyond GPS for humans, mobility assistants and soci-
ally assistive robots. Furthermore, mobility assistants have potential
to motivate elderly users to engage in physical and social activity,
promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

This Thematic Issue on mobility is focused, but not limited, to the
following topics:

* Route planning and accessibility: Given the desired position and
capabilities of the user, how do we plan a feasible route that considers
barriers, path conditions, affordances and physical effort, i.e. a path
that is completely accessible? How do we plan the route such that it
accounts for certain points of interest, e.g. suggest a detour to the

* Navigation and interaction design: How to present maps and route
information to elderly users? Current off-the-shelf solutions do not
consider their special requirements, such as diminished vision or
hearing; note also that the cognitive load of map-based user interfaces
is rather high.  We are also interested in alternative solutions to
turn-by-turn instructions, which work nicely in street networks, but
fail for pedestrians in open scene spaces. Additional modalities, such
as vibro-tactile handlebars, are also promising to improve the user

* Transportation modes and transitions: How to support different modes
of transportation, e.g. as a pedestrian on foot, with a walker, on a
wheelchair, by public transportation, etc.? How is a seamless tran-
sition between these modes achieved?

* Security and orientation: How to assist users when they get lost, the
technical assistance fails, there is an emergency, or they need further
orientation (e.g. in case of slight dementia)?

* Elderly care and wellbeing: Technology can play an important role to
motivate users to engage in physical and social activity, promoting
physiological and mental health of the ageing population. Recently,
activity-tracking devices, such as fitness wristbands and smart watches,
successfully entered the market, which motivate their users to achieve
certain goals, i.e. number of steps per day. Further, serious games have
been developed to motivate rehabilitation-training programs. The same
principles could be applied to mobility assistants in order to keep
their users active and healthy.

* Seamless indoor and outdoor positioning: Sensorial equipment like
Satellite Navigation or inertial sensors is widely available in mobile
devices today and facilitates outdoor localization up to a certain
degree of precision. Indoor localization solutions for users and/or
Socially Assistive Robots (SAR) require more sophisticated sensorial
equipment such as RFID beacons or Computer Vision/LIDAR. How can robots
sense nearby users? How can a smooth transition between indoor and
outdoor spaces be achieved?

* Environmental representations and maps: What representations of maps
and their semantics are suitable for hybrid modelling of indoor and
outdoor route networks along with relevant impediments, affordances,
landmarks, and points of interests? We are further interested in
sensor-based approaches to obtain such maps of buildings and
furnishings, such as SLAM.

Submission Process:

Papers should be of 15 pages or longer (maximum is 30 pages). The number
of pages should match the content, and we invite contributions that
present details that can’t be published elsewhere. Papers should adhere
to the guidelines given on the submission webpage:
When submitting, authors should highlight in the cover letter that the
submission is for the particular Thematic Issue. Prospective authors
are encouraged to contact the guest editors of this Thematic Issue in
advance, indicating their interest and tentative title of the paper.

Important Dates and Dissemination Plan:

* Deadline for manuscript submissions: March 2nd, 2015
* Notification to authors: April 29th, 2015
* Targeted publication date: September 2015
