Representatives of 26 CHI Local SIGs from 19 countries participated
in the 4th annual CHI Local SIGs workshop at CHI 2000 last week in
The Hague, The Netherlands.  My thanks to all participants.

A sampling of things that are happening "locally" in the world of CHI
Local SIGs:

 Europe

  BelCHI became a chartered CHI Local SIG on March 30.

  SIGCHI.DK held a mini conference on March 28 offering two lectures,
  one on pervasive computing and one on narratives in multimedia and
  internet productions, followed by a selection of six workshops.

  Toulouse SIGCHI's meeting April 13 : "Approche ergonomique de la
  fonction d'aide des consignes", Helene Veyrac, GRIC/IRIT.  (Toulouse
  SIGCHI's homepage gets 400+ hits/month.)

  SIGCHI.NL played key roles in the success of CHI 2000 in The
  Netherlands.  Many congratulations and thanks.

  Plans for a CHI Local SIG in Spain are progressing rapidly.

  SwissCHI's program March 30: "Knowledge Markets: New approaches
  to Knowledge Management (including a report from the AAAI workshop on
  "Bringing Knowledge Business Processes").


 Africa

  CHI-SA 2000 conference program details have come together and are
  available at http://www.chi-sa.org.za/CHISA2000.htm


 Americas (outside USA)

  CapCHI's next meeting takes place on Wednesday, April 12 at Nortel
  Woodline 2, featuring Dick Penn, who will be presenting "Corporate
  User Interface Standards."


 United States

  BayCHI's program April 11: "Language, Culture, & Interaction
  Design," Heiko Sacher & Michael Margolis.  BayCHI-North met
  March 21 and featured presentations by Dan Ziagos and Elisa
  McWhinney

  LA-SIGCHI will meet on the last Wednesday of April.  Richard Gaskin
  will give a presentation on MetaCard, a free UI prototyping tool.

  DC-CHI will not meet in April (due to CHI 2000) but is preparing
  a design competition for May akin to the interactionary event held
  at CHI 2000.

  CHI*Atlanta's March Program (03.23.2000) occurred at IBM
  Interactive Design Studio and was a discussion about "Reconsiderations
  on Usability for Existing Web Sites." The lead discussant was Peter
  Blakeney, Managing Director, Worldwide Design Services, IBM.

  GB/SIGCHI's April 11 program: "The Evolution of Usability Engineering
  in the e-Business Development Center of  Computer Sciences Corporation."
  Speakers: Deborah Mayhew, Jeff Volzer, Seth Weismer, Pete McNally, Cris
  Necochea, Irene Rubin, and Victoria Moseley Dials.

  LowellCHI will meet April 27.  Speaker: Rob Jacob.  Program: TBA.

  MOCHI's April 12 meeting will feature Jeff Bates, co-founder of
  Slashdot.org.  This interactive event will be held at the University of
  Michigan, but will also be broadcast on the internet.

  BuckCHI will host a presentation/mini-workshop entitled "Accessing
  User Experience: A hands-on demonstration of techniques for accessing
  user experience and inspiring design" on April 11.  Speakers: Liz
  Sanders, Bryan Goodpaster, Colin William, and Shea Tillman of SonicRim.
  BuckCHI also met March 29; Don Stredney spoke on "Interactive
  Simulation Technologies: Implications for Education, Training, and
  Industry."

  CHIFOO will meet April 25.  Leo Frishberg will make a presentation
  entitled, "Plan AHEAD: Developing a UI developer's tool."

  NUCHI met March 28.  Andy Schechterman & Jason Whitney presented
  their key learnings from the Studio 2000 Conference.

  Puget Sound SIGCHI met March 15 featuring a Holly M. Jamesen
  presentation entitled, "Got Usability?"

  MilwauCHI's April 4 program title: "How has the Web changed the UI
  Design process?"  Erling Amundson interviews Sue Braun from Gomoll
  Research & Design and Eric Bond from M&I Data Services.  Snacks and
  beverages provided by Northwestern Mutual.
