MobileHCI 2012 Workshop on Interaction with Deformable Displays

Technological developments in display technologies allow us to explore 
the design of mobile devices that extend beyond the rigid, flat display 
surfaces with which we are currently familiar. The next generation 
mobile devices will instead include deformable display surfaces where 
users can physically push, pull, bend, flex twist or squeeze for 
interaction or have those actions performed by the device itself so that 
it physically mutates to better represent the on-screen content.

We invite academics and industrial practitioners to submit a 4–6 page 
position page (in MobileHCI extended abstracts format), including a 
short bio, by email to [log in to unmask] by May 25 in order 
to participate in this one-day workshop.

Your position paper should detail a case-study that represents your 
position in this area: we are interested in all aspects of Deformable 
Displays: from the methods, materials and alternatives for the 
construction of such displays to the design of input techniques and how 
shape change can be used as an additional channel for output. The case 
study should include any relevant conceptual, hardware, or software 
elements and include discussion questions and challenges for the future. 
We also encourage submitters to demonstrate prototypes at the 
workshop—please include a note in your paper if you are able to bring 
along a prototype.

We aim to put together a programme of exciting work on deformable 
displays to facilitate discussion and shape directions for research in 
this area.

Important dates:
- May 25: Workshop submission deadline
- June 29: Notification of acceptance
- September 21: Workshop at MobileHCI 2012
