Session Description

Cognitive science has tended to neglect the fact that thinking is often an
emotional process. This talk will provide an integrated account of the
mental mechanisms responsible for emotional cognition. These mechanisms
operate at multiple levels: social, psychological, neural, and molecular. I
will describe computational models that simulate the structures and
processes of emotional cognition at three different levels, the social, the
psychological, and the neural, and show the interrelations of these levels.
I will also discuss the application of mechanisms of emotional cognition to
domains such as science, law, and everyday decision making, and briefly
address the normative question of the extent to which emotional cognition is
rational.

This seminar is sponsored by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates and Elluminate.
