Displays Take New Shape: An Agenda for Future Interactive Surfaces

CHI 2013 Workshop - April 28, 2013 in Paris, France
http://displayworkshop.media.mit.edu/CHI2013

========================================================================

Interactive displays are taking new shapes. Improvised displays transform everyday objects, surfaces and the human body into displays. Minimal displays leverage very simple visual cues for conveying information. Curved, flexible and shape-changing displays communicate through the shape itself.

This workshop provides a forum for sharing and discussing visions of future interactive surfaces that leverage alternative display types and form factors to better convey information and enable more expressive input. By doing so, we aim to identify and understand emerging trends and define an agenda for future research and development.

WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS

We invite contributions that present and discuss a vision of future interactive displays and surfaces from the perspective of technology, applications, or social implications. Which challenges and problems of today's interactive displays will they overcome? Which new challenges might arise because of them? What are the necessary steps to realize this vision, in terms of technology, concepts, interactions, or social practice? The proposed vision should be supported by the authors' current work demonstrating how they build toward that future or analyze that future, e.g. through technological developments, design explorations, interactive prototypes, or social studies. We encourage submissions from a diverse range of participants, perspectives and disciplines.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
* Turning everyday objects and surfaces into displays
* On-body displays
* 3D shaped displays
* Curved, flexible, resizable and shape-changing displays
* Enabling technologies: display, projection, actuation and sensing technologies
* Applications that benefit from future interactive surfaces
* Novel interaction techniques and visualizations
* Social implications
* Case studies

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Position papers of maximum 4 pages in the CHI extended abstracts format should be submitted on the workshop homepage by January 11, 2013. Submissions will be selected based on their originality, quality and ability to promote discussion amongst the community. Notifications of acceptance will be given by February 8, 2013. One author of each paper is required to register to the workshop and one day of CHI'13. The one-day workshop will take place in conjunction with CHI'13 in Paris, on Sunday, April 28, 2013. Questions should be directed to [log in to unmask]
